Background of the Study
Environmental design has emerged as a promising approach to crime prevention by modifying the physical environment to deter criminal activities. In Epe Local Government Area, Lagos State, urban planning and architectural design are being increasingly recognized for their role in enhancing public safety. The concept of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) posits that thoughtful design elements—such as improved lighting, open spaces, and natural surveillance—can significantly reduce opportunities for crime (Ogunleye, 2023). Local authorities have begun integrating these principles into community development projects, aiming to create environments that discourage criminal behavior. Empirical evidence suggests that well-designed urban spaces can foster social interaction, enhance community cohesion, and ultimately lower crime rates (Adebanjo, 2024). However, challenges remain in the implementation of these designs due to budgetary constraints and conflicting urban development priorities. This study intends to evaluate the impact of environmental design on crime prevention in Epe, analyzing both the theoretical foundations and practical applications of CPTED. By drawing on case studies, statistical analyses, and community feedback, the research aims to offer insights into how environmental modifications can be optimized to promote safer neighborhoods (Bamidele, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
In Epe Local Government Area, despite the introduction of environmental design initiatives aimed at preventing crime, there is insufficient evidence on their effectiveness (Olufemi, 2023). The lack of systematic studies evaluating how design elements influence criminal behavior leaves a gap in understanding the practical benefits of CPTED. Budgetary limitations, inadequate planning, and conflicting urban development priorities further hinder the optimal implementation of environmental design strategies. These shortcomings result in continued criminal activities, undermining public safety efforts. A comprehensive investigation into the relationship between environmental design and crime prevention is crucial to justify further investments and refine existing strategies (Akinyemi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess the current environmental design practices in Epe.

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of these practices in preventing crime.

  • To recommend improvements for optimizing environmental design for crime reduction.

Research Questions:

  • What environmental design features are implemented in Epe to prevent crime?

  • How effective are these design elements in reducing criminal activities?

  • What modifications can enhance the crime prevention potential of environmental design?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Effective environmental design is associated with lower crime rates in Epe.

  • H2: Poor implementation of design features reduces their effectiveness in crime prevention.

  • H3: Enhancing urban design standards improves overall community safety.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it evaluates how environmental design contributes to crime prevention in Epe Local Government Area. Its findings will assist urban planners, policymakers, and community stakeholders in developing strategies that integrate CPTED principles effectively. The insights provided will support safer urban development and promote community well-being. By demonstrating the practical impact of environmental modifications on crime, the research offers a foundation for future urban planning initiatives (Ogunleye, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to assessing the impact of environmental design on crime prevention in Epe Local Government Area, Lagos State. It focuses exclusively on local design interventions and their outcomes.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Environmental Design: The process of planning and constructing physical spaces to influence behavior and improve safety.

  • Crime Prevention: Measures and strategies aimed at reducing criminal activities.

  • CPTED: Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, a multi-disciplinary approach to reducing crime.
