Background of the Study
Gang activities have become a pressing concern in many urban areas, and their influence extends into the educational environment. In Enugu North Local Government Area, Enugu State, the involvement of youth in gang-related activities has been increasingly noted among secondary school students. Peer pressure, socio-economic challenges, and a quest for belonging often push adolescents toward gang affiliations (Nwosu, 2023). The allure of gang culture—characterized by a sense of identity, protection, and financial gain—creates an environment where students may engage in risky behaviors that disrupt academic pursuits and personal development. Educational institutions have become inadvertent arenas for gang recruitment, as the lack of effective monitoring and supportive programs contributes to the proliferation of such groups (Okafor, 2024). The negative consequences of gang involvement include increased truancy, poor academic performance, and a higher likelihood of engaging in criminal activities. Furthermore, the normalization of violence and illegal practices within these gangs undermines the social fabric of the community (Ifeanyi, 2025). This study seeks to assess the influence of gang activities on secondary school students by examining the socio-psychological factors that drive youth toward such affiliations, as well as the subsequent impact on their educational outcomes and overall well-being.

Statement of the Problem
There is a growing concern that gang activities are negatively influencing secondary school students in Enugu North Local Government Area, yet systematic research in this area is scant (Eze, 2023). The infiltration of gang culture into schools has been linked to declining academic performance and increased engagement in risky and illegal behaviors. The absence of effective preventive measures and support systems further exacerbates the vulnerability of these students. Additionally, the community lacks coordinated efforts to monitor and address the root causes of gang involvement, making it difficult to formulate effective interventions. This study aims to fill the research gap by providing empirical evidence on the extent of gang influence on student behavior and academic outcomes (Olayinka, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To determine the extent of gang influence on secondary school students.

  • To examine the socio-psychological factors contributing to gang involvement.

  • To recommend effective strategies for reducing gang influence in schools.

Research Questions:

  • How prevalent are gang activities among secondary school students in Enugu North?

  • What factors contribute to the attraction of gang culture among youths?

  • What measures can schools implement to reduce gang influence?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Gang activities significantly affect the academic performance of secondary school students.

  • H2: Socioeconomic challenges contribute to students’ involvement in gangs.

  • H3: Implementation of school-based intervention programs reduces gang influence.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the impact of gang activities on secondary school students in Enugu North, providing critical insights for educators, policymakers, and community leaders. The research outcomes will guide the development of targeted interventions to curb gang influence and improve educational outcomes. Enhanced understanding of these dynamics will contribute to creating a safer school environment and reducing youth involvement in criminal activities (Nwosu, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to assessing the influence of gang activities on secondary school students in Enugu North Local Government Area, Enugu State. It focuses exclusively on the local educational context without comparing it to other regions.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Gang Activities: Organized group behaviors that involve criminal acts and deviant conduct.

  • Secondary School Students: Adolescents enrolled in high school education.

  • Peer Pressure: The influence exerted by a peer group on individual behavior.
