Background of the Study
Human trafficking remains a critical issue with far-reaching economic and social implications. In Nkanu East, Enugu State, the phenomenon of human trafficking not only violates human rights but also adversely affects the local economy. Trafficking disrupts labor markets, undermines legitimate business practices, and perpetuates cycles of poverty and exploitation (Chukwu, 2023). Victims of human trafficking are often exploited for forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation, which diminishes their ability to contribute productively to society. The illicit nature of human trafficking further hampers economic growth by siphoning resources away from legitimate industries and creating an underground economy that is difficult to regulate (Okafor, 2024). Furthermore, communities affected by human trafficking often face stigmatization and reduced social cohesion, further complicating economic recovery efforts (Ikechukwu, 2025). The study explores the intricate relationship between human trafficking and its economic implications in Nkanu East, examining how the exploitation of vulnerable populations impedes sustainable development. By investigating these dynamics, the research seeks to propose targeted interventions that can address both the human rights abuses and the economic detriments associated with trafficking.

Statement of the Problem
Nkanu East Local Government Area is experiencing severe economic repercussions as a result of human trafficking. The clandestine nature of trafficking operations has led to significant losses in human capital and undermined legitimate economic activities (Chukwu, 2023). The exploitation of vulnerable individuals not only results in human suffering but also disrupts local labor markets and reduces productivity. Despite governmental efforts to combat trafficking, the region continues to struggle with inadequate law enforcement, corruption, and a lack of comprehensive support for victims (Okafor, 2024). These factors contribute to persistent economic instability and social disintegration, necessitating an in-depth investigation into the economic implications of human trafficking in the area (Ikechukwu, 2025). This study aims to identify the mechanisms through which trafficking affects economic development and to recommend effective policy measures for intervention.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the extent of human trafficking in Nkanu East.

  2. To assess the economic impact of human trafficking on local development.

  3. To propose policy measures to combat trafficking and mitigate its economic effects.

  1. How prevalent is human trafficking in Nkanu East?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Human trafficking significantly hampers economic growth in Nkanu East.

  2. The exploitation of trafficked individuals leads to decreased productivity in the local economy.

  3. Strengthening law enforcement and victim support will reduce the economic impacts of trafficking.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the dual challenge of human trafficking and its economic implications in Nkanu East. The findings will inform policymakers and stakeholders about the profound impact of trafficking on local development and economic stability. By highlighting the link between human exploitation and economic downturns, the research will support the creation of targeted interventions aimed at combating trafficking and promoting sustainable economic growth. The study also contributes to the broader discourse on human rights and economic development (Chukwu, 2023; Okafor, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to evaluating the economic implications of human trafficking within Nkanu East Local Government Area, Enugu State. It focuses on available local data and documented trafficking cases, which may not capture the full extent of the underground economy.
