Background of the Study:
Gender roles have long influenced career choices, shaping both individual aspirations and societal expectations. In Ile-Ife Local Government Area, Osun State, traditional cultural norms dictate the professions deemed suitable for men and women, often leading to occupational segregation and limited opportunities for those seeking to deviate from conventional paths (Ogun, 2023). Societal and familial expectations reinforce these gender-specific roles, affecting educational pursuits, professional development, and overall career progression. Although globalization and increased access to education have challenged these traditional norms, the vestiges of gender roles continue to exert significant influence. This study explores the extent to which gender roles impact career choices among young adults in Ile-Ife, examining the interplay between cultural expectations, personal aspirations, and socio-economic factors. The findings are expected to contribute to a deeper understanding of occupational dynamics in the region and inform interventions that promote gender equality in career opportunities (Adeolu, 2024). Additionally, modern influences such as social media and international trends are gradually reshaping perceptions of gender roles, providing a nuanced perspective on the evolving career aspirations of young adults (Ibrahim, 2025).

Statement of the Problem:
Despite efforts toward gender equality, entrenched gender roles continue to shape career choices among young adults in Ile-Ife. Traditional cultural expectations often direct individuals toward specific professions deemed appropriate for their gender, limiting professional potential and reinforcing occupational segregation (Adebayo, 2023). This phenomenon restricts personal growth and contributes to an uneven distribution of skills within the workforce. Young adults attempting to pursue non-traditional careers frequently face resistance from both family and society, leading to constrained opportunities and reduced self-confidence. Without targeted interventions to challenge these deep-rooted perceptions, the resulting disparities will persist, hindering socio-economic progress in the region.

This study is significant as it explores the impact of gender roles on career choices among young adults in Ile-Ife, offering insights into the challenges and opportunities for achieving gender equality in the workforce. The findings will inform policy reforms and educational programs aimed at broadening career options for all individuals (Olatunde, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the impact of gender roles on career choices among young adults in Ile-Ife Local Government Area, Osun State, focusing on local cultural norms and occupational trends.
