Background of the Study:
Traditional rulers have long served as custodians of cultural heritage and community governance in many Nigerian communities. In Oron Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, their role extends beyond ceremonial duties to active participation in local dispute resolution, community development, and governance. Rooted in indigenous systems of authority, traditional rulers mediate between governmental structures and local communities, ensuring that customs and traditions are preserved while modern policies are implemented (Ekong, 2023). As Nigerian governance evolves, traditional institutions face the challenge of adapting to contemporary issues, yet their involvement in conflict resolution, resource allocation, and community mobilization remains indispensable (Inyang, 2024). However, their influence is increasingly contested amid political interference, the erosion of traditional values, and tensions between customary laws and statutory regulations. This study evaluates the functions and impact of traditional rulers in Oron, examining both their strengths and limitations within modern governance frameworks. By integrating historical perspectives with contemporary analyses, the research offers a comprehensive understanding of how traditional authorities navigate current challenges and contribute to effective community governance (Udo, 2025).

Statement of the Problem:
In Oron Local Government Area, traditional rulers continue to play a pivotal role in community governance; however, their contributions remain under-examined in modern administrative systems. Conflicts between customary authority and statutory governance often arise, compounded by political interference that may compromise their independence and efficacy (Okon, 2023). Such discord leads to fragmented community development and inefficient conflict resolution, undermining the benefits of traditional leadership. Moreover, the lack of systematic documentation of their roles complicates the evaluation of their impact on governance. Addressing these issues is essential for restoring accountability, enhancing public participation, and promoting more effective local governance. This study intends to provide empirical evidence on the role of traditional rulers in Oron and to explore the challenges they face within the evolving governance landscape (Ekanem, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To evaluate the role of traditional rulers in community governance in Oron.

  • To identify challenges traditional rulers face in the modern governance context.

  • To propose strategies for integrating traditional leadership with formal governance systems.

Research Questions:

  • What is the role of traditional rulers in community governance in Oron?

  • What challenges do traditional rulers encounter in modern governance frameworks?

  • How can traditional leadership be effectively integrated with statutory governance?

Research Hypotheses:

  • Traditional rulers play a significant role in community governance in Oron.

  • Political interference negatively affects the effectiveness of traditional leadership.

  • Integration of traditional and formal governance systems will enhance community development.

Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it illuminates the vital role traditional rulers play in community governance within Oron. Insights from the research will inform policymakers on strategies to integrate traditional leadership with modern governance, thereby improving accountability and community development (Aniebiet, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to evaluating the role of traditional rulers in community governance in Oron Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, focusing solely on local governance dynamics.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Traditional Rulers: Leaders appointed through customary systems with authority in cultural and community matters (Eko, 2023).

  • Community Governance: The process of managing community affairs through both traditional and modern systems (Idemudia, 2024).

  • Customary Laws: Indigenous laws derived from local traditions and cultural practices (Mbanefo, 2023).
