Background of the Study
Traditional birth attendants (TBAs) have long been a cornerstone of maternal health services in Ede North, Osun State. Embedded in the cultural and historical fabric of the community, TBAs provide care that is accessible, affordable, and deeply rooted in indigenous practices (Eze, 2023). Their role has become particularly significant in regions where formal healthcare facilities are limited, making them essential for maternal and neonatal care. Over time, TBAs have garnered both respect and skepticism; while they are revered for their personal approach and community trust, concerns persist about the safety and efficacy of their practices in the face of modern medical standards (Okoro, 2024). Recent studies indicate that although TBAs offer critical support, the absence of standardized training and integration with formal health systems can lead to complications during childbirth and postpartum care (Chinwe, 2023). This appraisal seeks to critically evaluate the effectiveness of TBAs by examining their training, practices, and the socio-cultural context in which they operate. The study acknowledges the dual role of TBAs in providing both traditional care and acting as intermediaries between the community and formal healthcare services. With evolving health challenges and increased emphasis on evidence-based practices, there is an urgent need to assess the impact of TBAs on maternal health outcomes in Ede North. In doing so, the research will explore how traditional practices can be harmonized with modern medical protocols to improve overall maternal health (Uche, 2023). The study also considers the implications of governmental policies and community perceptions in shaping the role of TBAs, thereby offering a comprehensive overview of their contributions and challenges in contemporary maternal healthcare delivery.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the long-standing role of TBAs in maternal health, there are growing concerns regarding their ability to meet modern healthcare standards. In Ede North, limited training and lack of formal certification often result in inconsistent practices that can compromise maternal and infant health outcomes (Chinwe, 2023). Reports of complications during childbirth and inadequate emergency response mechanisms underscore the need for a systematic appraisal of TBA services. The disconnect between traditional practices and evidence-based medical care has led to debates about the integration of TBAs into the formal healthcare system (Okoro, 2024). Moreover, socio-cultural factors and deeply entrenched beliefs further complicate efforts to introduce standardized practices (Eze, 2023). This study aims to identify the specific challenges faced by TBAs, assess the quality of care they provide, and propose strategies for improved collaboration with formal health institutions. The research is timely, as it addresses the urgent need to balance cultural traditions with the imperatives of modern maternal health care, ensuring safer outcomes for mothers and newborns (Uche, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  • To evaluate the current practices and training of traditional birth attendants in Ede North.

  • To assess the maternal health outcomes associated with TBA-led care.

  • To recommend strategies for integrating TBAs into the formal healthcare system.

Research Questions

  • What are the common practices of TBAs in maternal health services?

  • How do these practices impact maternal and neonatal health outcomes?

  • What measures can be implemented to improve the integration of TBAs with formal healthcare providers?

Research Hypotheses

  • H1: TBAs significantly influence maternal health outcomes in Ede North.

  • H2: Inadequate training of TBAs correlates with higher maternal and neonatal complications.

  • H3: Integrative approaches between TBAs and formal healthcare systems lead to improved maternal health services.

Significance of the Study
This study highlights the critical role of TBAs in maternal health and underscores the need for integrating traditional practices with modern healthcare. By addressing systemic gaps, the research offers a roadmap for enhancing maternal care and reducing complications. Its findings are relevant for health policymakers and community leaders seeking culturally sensitive yet effective health interventions (Chinwe, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the appraisal of traditional birth attendants in maternal health services within Ede North Local Government Area. The focus remains strictly on the practices, training, and impact of TBAs, without extending to other regions or healthcare providers.

Definitions of Terms

  • Traditional Birth Attendant (TBA): A community-based caregiver who assists in childbirth using indigenous knowledge.

  • Maternal Health: The health services and care provided to women during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum.
