Background of the Study:
Religious education is often credited with fostering a spirit of service and altruism among students. In secondary schools in Sokoto North LGA, religious education plays a pivotal role in nurturing a commitment to community service. By integrating teachings on compassion, charity, and social responsibility, religious education encourages students to actively participate in community development projects. The curriculum emphasizes the importance of selflessness and civic duty, aligning personal growth with the well-being of the community (Ibrahim, 2023). In Sokoto North LGA, where communal ties are deeply rooted, educators leverage religious narratives and case studies to highlight the moral imperatives of community service. Through group discussions, volunteer initiatives, and reflective sessions, students are guided to translate theoretical religious teachings into practical acts of service. This integrated approach helps students to understand that community service is not just an extracurricular activity but a vital component of their moral and social development (Abdullahi, 2024). Recent empirical studies have demonstrated a positive correlation between religious education and increased community engagement, suggesting that students exposed to religious teachings are more inclined to volunteer and participate in social initiatives (Olawale, 2023). Furthermore, the curriculum is often designed to address pressing social issues such as poverty and inequality, empowering students to become active agents of change. The fusion of traditional religious values with modern educational practices creates a robust framework for encouraging service-oriented behaviors, making religious education a critical tool for community development (Mohammed, 2024). This background establishes a foundation for understanding the mechanisms by which religious education fosters community service, reflecting both historical values and contemporary societal needs.
Statement of the Problem:
Despite the recognized role of religious education in promoting community service, there exists a noticeable gap between the curriculum’s theoretical emphasis on service and the actual levels of student participation in community initiatives within Sokoto North LGA. While the curriculum advocates for altruistic values and social responsibility, observable engagement in community service projects is inconsistent. Many students seem to internalize the moral imperatives in theory yet fail to translate these ideals into practical action. Contributing factors to this discrepancy may include outdated pedagogical approaches, insufficient practical training, and external socio-economic challenges that hinder active participation (Bello, 2023). Furthermore, the curriculum’s focus on theoretical instruction often overshadows the practical aspects of community involvement, leaving students underprepared to confront real-world social issues. This disconnect not only limits the potential impact of religious education on community service but also undermines efforts to cultivate a robust culture of volunteerism and civic responsibility. There is a pressing need to reassess the current educational strategies to determine whether they effectively bridge the gap between religious ideals and practical community engagement. The study aims to identify these gaps and propose enhancements to the curriculum that can foster a more consistent and impactful approach to community service among students (Ibrahim, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
1. To assess the influence of religious education on students’ attitudes towards community service.
2. To examine the effectiveness of religious education in promoting active community participation.
3. To evaluate the pedagogical methods used in religious education to encourage community service in secondary schools.
Research Questions:
1. How does religious education affect students’ willingness to engage in community service?

Research Hypotheses:
1. H1: Religious education positively influences students’ attitudes towards community service.
2. H2: Students exposed to a comprehensive religious curriculum are more likely to participate in community service activities.
3. H3: Innovative pedagogical methods in religious education significantly enhance students’ commitment to community service.
Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it provides a detailed understanding of how religious education shapes students’ approach to community service. It offers practical insights into curriculum design and teaching methods, which could enhance community engagement. The findings will be valuable for educators, policymakers, and community leaders aiming to foster social responsibility among youth, ultimately contributing to community development and societal well-being (Olawale, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to secondary schools in Sokoto North LGA and focuses exclusively on the impact of religious education on community service attitudes and practices. It examines the curriculum content and pedagogical strategies within these institutions without considering external socio-economic influences.
