Background of the Study

Extracurricular sports have long been recognized as a catalyst for fostering positive peer relationships among students. In Ilorin West Local Government Area, Kwara State, the role of extracurricular sports extends beyond physical fitness, serving as a platform for social interaction, teamwork, and the development of interpersonal skills (Adewale, 2023). Participation in sports activities outside the regular curriculum creates an environment where students can interact, collaborate, and form meaningful relationships with their peers (Chinonso, 2024). These interactions are critical in shaping social behavior and mitigating issues such as bullying, social isolation, and negative peer pressure (Onyema, 2023). Schools in Ilorin West have increasingly integrated extracurricular sports into their programs as a strategy to build a sense of community and promote inclusivity. Research suggests that students involved in extracurricular sports exhibit higher levels of self-esteem, improved communication skills, and a greater capacity for empathy (Olatunji, 2023). Furthermore, extracurricular sports provide opportunities for students to engage with diverse groups, thereby enhancing their cultural competence and broadening their social networks (Babatunde, 2024). Despite the documented benefits, challenges remain in ensuring that these programs are accessible and well-supported by school administrations. Limited resources, scheduling conflicts, and varying levels of student interest can sometimes hinder the effectiveness of extracurricular sports in promoting positive peer relationships (Akinola, 2023). This study seeks to explore how extracurricular sports contribute to the development of positive peer relationships among students in Ilorin West, identifying the factors that facilitate or impede this process. By examining both the benefits and challenges of extracurricular sports programs, the research aims to provide recommendations that can enhance the social environment within schools, ultimately contributing to improved student well-being and academic performance (Obi, 2024).

Statement of the Problem

In Ilorin West Local Government Area, the challenge of fostering positive peer relationships among students has emerged as a significant concern, particularly in light of the social pressures prevalent in modern educational settings. While extracurricular sports have been recognized as a potential solution, many schools face difficulties in implementing these programs effectively. Students who participate in extracurricular sports tend to develop stronger peer bonds; however, inconsistent program quality and limited availability can restrict these benefits (Ogunyemi, 2023). In some cases, scheduling conflicts and resource constraints have resulted in uneven participation rates, leaving segments of the student population without access to the social benefits provided by team sports (Chukwu, 2024). Additionally, there is a lack of empirical data on how extracurricular sports specifically influence peer relationships in the context of Ilorin West. The absence of structured support and guidance from school authorities further exacerbates the problem, as students may not fully capitalize on the opportunities for interpersonal development (Adeniran, 2023). This study aims to bridge this gap by systematically investigating the role of extracurricular sports in promoting positive peer relationships, identifying the challenges that limit their effectiveness, and proposing strategies to enhance program delivery. By addressing these issues, the research seeks to contribute to the creation of a more inclusive and supportive school environment that fosters robust peer networks and improves overall student well-being (Ibrahim, 2024).
