Background of the Study

Gender equality in education is a cornerstone for societal development, and schools play a pivotal role in shaping attitudes towards gender roles. Sport education offers a unique avenue to promote gender equality by providing equal opportunities for all students to participate in physical activities, challenge stereotypes, and develop mutual respect. In Jos North, traditional gender norms have often restricted the participation of female students in sports. However, recent educational reforms and progressive initiatives have sought to bridge this gap by incorporating sport education programs that are inclusive and sensitive to gender issues (Adamu, 2023). These programs encourage active participation from both genders, fostering an environment where skills, effort, and teamwork are valued over traditional gender roles. Research indicates that when female and male students engage together in sports, they develop improved communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills, ultimately contributing to a more balanced and egalitarian society (Nneka, 2024).

The introduction of sport education in Jos North secondary schools has been seen as a catalyst for change in challenging gender stereotypes. By actively involving female students in competitive and recreational sports, these programs not only enhance physical fitness but also build confidence and leadership qualities. The structured nature of sport education allows students to experience first-hand the benefits of collaboration, respect, and equality. Furthermore, the inclusive environment promotes positive attitudes and reduces gender-based discrimination, thereby preparing students to thrive in diverse environments both within and outside the school setting. Educational policymakers in Jos North have increasingly recognized the importance of these initiatives in fostering social change. As schools adopt more inclusive curricula that integrate sport education with gender sensitivity training, there is an opportunity to reshape long-standing perceptions about gender roles. The dynamic interaction between physical activity and social learning creates a robust platform for promoting gender equality. In this way, sport education is not merely an extracurricular activity but a transformative tool that can influence broader societal norms (Okonkwo, 2025). This study aims to explore how sport education can be leveraged to promote gender equality among secondary school students, offering insights into both its challenges and potential for fostering an inclusive educational environment (Adamu, 2023; Nneka, 2024; Okonkwo, 2025).

Statement of the Problem

Despite the promising potential of sport education to promote gender equality, numerous obstacles impede its effective implementation in secondary schools in Jos North. Traditional cultural norms and stereotypes continue to restrict female participation in sports, resulting in unequal opportunities for male and female students (Ijeoma, 2023). Many schools struggle with outdated attitudes, insufficient female role models in sports, and a lack of gender-sensitive training for educators, which hinders the creation of truly inclusive sport education programs. Additionally, infrastructural challenges, such as inadequate sports facilities and limited equipment, disproportionately affect female students who are often given lower priority in resource allocation (Ngozi, 2024). These issues are compounded by a curriculum that has not been sufficiently reformed to emphasize gender equality as a core objective of sport education.

Furthermore, the absence of comprehensive policies to monitor and evaluate gender integration in sports programs leads to inconsistent implementation across schools. While some schools have made notable progress in creating balanced sports environments, others remain entrenched in gender-biased practices. The resultant disparities in participation rates and opportunities contribute to the perpetuation of gender inequality, limiting the potential benefits of sport education for female students. This study seeks to address these challenges by critically examining the existing sport education programs and assessing their impact on promoting gender equality in Jos North. By identifying key barriers and exploring potential solutions, the research aims to provide actionable recommendations for creating more inclusive and equitable sports environments in schools (Ijeoma, 2023; Ngozi, 2024; Okonkwo, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

• To evaluate the impact of sport education on gender equality among secondary school students.

• To identify challenges that limit female participation in school sports programs.

• To propose strategies for enhancing gender inclusivity in sport education.

Research Questions

• How does sport education influence gender equality in secondary schools?

• What are the main challenges affecting female participation in sports in Jos North?

• What strategies can be implemented to improve gender inclusivity in sport education programs?

Research Hypotheses

• H1: Sport education significantly improves gender equality among secondary school students.

• H2: Schools with inclusive sport programs exhibit higher female participation rates.

• H3: Implementing gender-sensitive training for educators enhances the effectiveness of sport education.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it investigates the role of sport education in advancing gender equality in secondary schools. By identifying obstacles and recommending inclusive practices, the research provides a framework for schools and policymakers to enhance female participation in sports. The findings will contribute to creating a more equitable educational environment and promote social change toward gender equality (Nneka, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study is limited to secondary schools in Jos North Local Government Area. It focuses exclusively on the role of sport education in promoting gender equality, excluding other dimensions of gender studies.
