Background of the Study
Nutrition education is increasingly recognized as a vital strategy in promoting lifelong healthy eating behaviors, particularly among school-aged children. In many educational settings, physical education classes are evolving from solely focusing on physical fitness to integrating broader health education elements, including nutrition. In Gusau Local Government Area, Zamfara State, there is a growing interest in understanding how incorporating nutrition education into physical education classes can influence students’ eating habits. Over recent years, evidence has shown that when young learners receive information about balanced diets and the benefits of various food groups in conjunction with regular physical activity, they are more likely to make informed dietary choices (Okafor, 2023). Such integrated approaches can provide a holistic perspective on health, where knowledge supports action.

Moreover, the contextual factors specific to Gusau – including socio-cultural dietary practices, local food availability, and community health challenges – make it imperative to tailor nutrition education to meet local needs. Recent studies indicate that contextualized curriculum interventions yield better outcomes in behavior change, as students can relate academic content to their daily lives (Adebayo, 2024). Furthermore, the dual exposure to physical exertion and nutrition information can stimulate an environment where the benefits of healthy eating become evident through improved physical performance and overall wellbeing. This correlation has been observed in pilot programs where enhanced nutrition literacy was linked to increased consumption of fruits, vegetables, and other nutrient-dense foods (Ibrahim, 2025).

In addition to curriculum-based interventions, the role of teachers as mediators of change cannot be understated. Educators who are well-equipped with both subject knowledge and practical strategies are more likely to engage students in discussions that challenge existing eating habits and inspire healthier choices. The interdisciplinary approach in physical education classes creates opportunities for interactive learning, including demonstrations, group projects, and practical sessions that reinforce theoretical concepts. Such innovative teaching methods have been associated with long-term improvements in dietary behavior (Chukwu, 2023). Thus, examining the effect of nutrition education within this framework is not only timely but also essential for informing policy and curriculum development aimed at reducing nutrition-related health issues in the region.

Ultimately, integrating nutrition education in physical education classes could serve as a catalyst for healthier lifestyles. By addressing the interconnectedness of diet and physical activity, this educational strategy has the potential to reduce the prevalence of diet-related chronic conditions. This study, therefore, is situated at the intersection of health education and practical physical activity, seeking to provide robust evidence on how these combined efforts can lead to meaningful improvements in students’ eating habits (Bello, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite numerous interventions aimed at improving public health outcomes, poor eating habits among students remain a pressing concern in Gusau Local Government Area. Many schools have yet to integrate nutrition education effectively within their physical education programs, leading to missed opportunities for early behavioral intervention. This gap in the educational system contributes to a cycle of unhealthy dietary practices, which may predispose students to chronic health issues such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. In many instances, the absence of practical nutrition knowledge prevents students from making informed decisions about their diets, despite the known benefits of balanced nutrition on physical performance and overall health (Abdulrahman, 2023).

Moreover, existing curricula often treat physical education and health education as separate entities rather than parts of an integrated approach to wellbeing. This separation diminishes the potential synergy between physical activity and nutritional awareness, limiting the impact of each on students’ lifestyle choices. Recent findings suggest that when these subjects are combined, students demonstrate a greater propensity to adopt healthier eating behaviors (Lawal, 2024). In Gusau, however, the practical challenges – including limited resources, inadequate teacher training in nutrition, and culturally entrenched dietary habits – have hindered the effective implementation of nutrition education. These challenges underscore the need for a systematic evaluation of how nutrition education, when incorporated into physical education classes, can directly influence eating behaviors.

Furthermore, the lack of localized data on the effectiveness of such integrative approaches makes it difficult for policymakers to design targeted interventions. This study aims to fill this gap by examining the influence of nutrition education on students’ eating habits, thereby providing evidence that could lead to curriculum reforms and improved health outcomes. By exploring these dynamics, the research will contribute to understanding the barriers and facilitators associated with integrating nutrition education into physical education settings (Emeka, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the influence of nutrition education integrated into physical education classes on students’ eating habits.

  2. To determine the relationship between enhanced nutrition literacy and dietary choices among students.

  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of current nutrition education interventions in changing eating behaviors in the local context.

Research Questions

  1. What impact does nutrition education in physical education classes have on students’ dietary habits?

  2. How does improved nutrition literacy correlate with healthier eating practices among students?

  3. What are the key factors that facilitate or hinder the successful integration of nutrition education into physical education curricula?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a significant positive effect of nutrition education on the healthy eating habits of students.

  2. Students exposed to integrated nutrition and physical education demonstrate greater nutrition literacy compared to those who are not.

  3. Effective teacher training in nutrition education significantly enhances the impact of physical education classes on students’ dietary choices.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it offers critical insights into the integration of nutrition education within physical education classes, potentially shaping future curriculum development and policy interventions in Gusau. By demonstrating how structured nutrition information can positively influence students’ eating habits, the research may guide educational reforms aimed at reducing diet-related health risks. Moreover, the findings could provide a framework for other regions facing similar challenges, promoting a holistic approach to health education that combines physical activity with nutritional awareness (Uche, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to examining the effect of nutrition education within physical education classes on students’ eating habits in Gusau Local Government Area, Zamfara State. The research does not extend to other subjects or educational levels, and it focuses solely on the targeted geographical region.
