Background of the Study:
Religious education has traditionally shaped the moral and cultural values of young learners, particularly where cultural heritage is closely linked with religious practice. In Ilorin East LGA, Kwara State, primary schools incorporate religious education as a core part of the curriculum to instill respect for cultural heritage. Through the teaching of religious principles alongside traditional customs and historical narratives, students learn about the cultural practices that have defined their communities. This approach is designed to foster a sense of identity and belonging while reinforcing respect for cultural heritage (Smith, 2024).

Globalization and modernization have challenged the preservation of traditional values, raising concerns that cultural practices may erode over time. Educators in Ilorin East LGA have therefore sought to use religious education as a means to reinforce cultural values and ensure that students appreciate their heritage. Effective religious education can enhance students' understanding of cultural norms, rituals, and values, thus contributing to a stronger sense of identity and community (Brown, 2023). However, the actual impact of religious education on fostering respect for cultural heritage remains underexplored. Factors such as curriculum content, teaching methodologies, and the role of educators as cultural custodians are crucial in determining how well students internalize and respect their cultural heritage (Adams, 2025).

This study evaluates the contribution of religious education to promoting respect for cultural heritage among primary school students. It will investigate how the integration of religious and cultural content in the curriculum, combined with effective teaching strategies, influences students' attitudes toward their cultural identity. Additionally, the study examines challenges posed by modern influences that may undermine traditional values. The findings are expected to provide recommendations for enhancing religious education to better preserve and promote cultural heritage.

Statement of the Problem:
Despite the integration of religious education in primary schools in Ilorin East LGA, there is growing concern regarding the declining respect for cultural heritage among students. Although the curriculum is designed to merge religious teachings with cultural traditions, educators and community leaders observe that many students are increasingly disconnected from their cultural roots. This disconnect may result from modern media influences, urbanization, and an insufficient emphasis on traditional practices in daily school activities. The current framework of religious education may not effectively bridge the gap between theoretical instruction and practical cultural appreciation (Smith, 2024).

Furthermore, the lack of empirical research assessing the impact of religious education on students’ cultural attitudes poses challenges for identifying which curricular aspects work and which do not. The observed erosion of cultural values raises concerns about long-term preservation in a rapidly modernizing society (Adams, 2025). This study aims to evaluate how religious education contributes to fostering respect for cultural heritage, examining curriculum, teaching methods, and educator roles. By identifying barriers and proposing actionable strategies, the research seeks to ensure that primary school students develop a profound respect for their cultural identity (Brown, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the contribution of religious education to fostering respect for cultural heritage among primary school students.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of curriculum content and teaching methods in promoting cultural values.

  3. To identify challenges and propose strategies for enhancing the role of religious education in preserving cultural heritage.

Research Questions:

  1. How does religious education influence students' respect for cultural heritage?

  2. What aspects of the curriculum effectively promote the appreciation of cultural traditions?

  3. What challenges hinder the successful integration of cultural heritage in religious education programs?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Religious education significantly contributes to fostering respect for cultural heritage among primary school students.

  2. Effective curriculum content enhances students' appreciation of cultural traditions.

  3. Modern influences negatively affect the impact of religious education on cultural respect.

Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it evaluates the impact of religious education on promoting respect for cultural heritage in primary schools in Ilorin East LGA. The findings will provide insights for educators and policymakers on enhancing the integration of cultural values within religious instruction. By identifying effective strategies and addressing existing challenges, the research aims to preserve and strengthen cultural identity among young learners, thereby sustaining the legacy of traditional practices (Brown, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to assessing the contribution of religious education to fostering respect for cultural heritage among primary school students in Ilorin East LGA. It focuses on curricular and pedagogical aspects related to cultural heritage and does not extend to other regions or educational levels. Limitations include potential biases in student responses and variations in teacher effectiveness.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Religious Education: The instructional process aimed at imparting religious beliefs, values, and practices.

  2. Cultural Heritage: The traditions, customs, and historical narratives that define a community's identity.

  3. Respect: Recognition and appreciation of the value and significance of cultural traditions.
