Background of the Study:
Moral education is an integral component of the educational system, not only fostering ethical behavior but also influencing academic diligence and responsibility. In Ilorin East LGA, Kwara State, there is an increasing emphasis on how moral education shapes students’ commitment to schoolwork and assignments. A strong moral foundation encourages traits such as discipline, responsibility, and perseverance—qualities essential for academic success (Brown, 2023).
In recent years, declining academic performance and student disengagement have prompted investigations into underlying factors affecting academic commitment. Schools in Ilorin East LGA have implemented programs that integrate moral lessons with academic instruction to bridge the gap between ethical values and educational responsibilities. These initiatives are designed to encourage students to view their assignments as opportunities to demonstrate integrity and hard work (Adams, 2025).
Modern challenges—including digital distractions and shifting social norms—further complicate students’ focus on schoolwork. Against this backdrop, moral education plays a crucial role by providing a structured framework that supports academic diligence. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of moral education in shaping students’ commitment to schoolwork by evaluating curriculum content, teaching methodologies, and the overall school environment (Smith, 2024). It will explore the correlation between moral values and academic performance, investigating whether a strong ethical foundation contributes to improved study habits and higher assignment completion rates.

Statement of the Problem:
Despite the integration of moral education programs intended to enhance academic commitment, many students in Ilorin East LGA display a waning dedication to schoolwork and assignments. Educators report that students often lack discipline and responsibility toward their academic tasks, suggesting that current moral education initiatives are not fully effective in translating ethical values into consistent academic effort. Contributing factors include inadequate reinforcement of moral principles, modern distractions, and a disconnect between theoretical teachings and academic expectations (Adams, 2025).
Moreover, a dearth of systematic research on the direct relationship between moral education and academic commitment makes it challenging for educators to identify effective integration strategies. Without comprehensive data, pinpointing curricular aspects that foster academic diligence remains difficult. This gap between the intended benefits of moral education and the practical outcomes in student performance underscores the need for targeted research. This study aims to investigate the impact of moral education on academic commitment, identify barriers preventing effective internalization of these values, and propose strategies to enhance the educational framework (Brown, 2023).
