Background of the Study
Respect for diverse traditions is essential in today’s multicultural society, and educational institutions play a pivotal role in nurturing this respect from a young age. In Jos North LGA, Plateau State, religious education is leveraged as a means to foster appreciation and respect for a variety of cultural and traditional practices. The curriculum integrates religious teachings with lessons on diversity, urging students to value not only their own traditions but also those of others (Okeke, 2023; Musa, 2024). Through religious education, students are exposed to a range of moral values such as empathy, humility, and tolerance, which underpin respectful interactions in a pluralistic society. Instructional methods often include comparative studies of different cultural practices, interactive discussions, and community projects that highlight the significance of diversity in enriching societal life. Despite these initiatives, there remains a gap between the curriculum’s objectives and the observable levels of respect for diverse traditions among students (Ibrahim, 2023). Challenges such as cultural stereotypes, limited teacher training, and resistance to change have impeded the full realization of the curriculum’s goals. Moreover, the rapid pace of globalization and the influx of external cultural influences add complexity to the process of nurturing respect for local as well as foreign traditions. This study seeks to evaluate the role of religious education in promoting respect for diverse traditions among students in Jos North LGA by examining curriculum content, teaching methodologies, and student attitudes. Through a combination of surveys, classroom observations, and interviews with educators and community leaders, the research aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the effectiveness of current educational practices (Adebayo, 2024). The findings are expected to inform policy makers and educators on how to enhance curriculum design and pedagogical approaches, ensuring that religious education effectively contributes to the development of respectful and culturally aware citizens.
Statement of the Problem
Although religious education in Jos North LGA is designed to promote respect for diverse traditions, there is evidence that the curriculum’s impact on student attitudes remains limited. Teachers report that while the curriculum emphasizes the importance of respecting cultural diversity, many students continue to exhibit biases and a lack of understanding of traditions different from their own (Okeke, 2023). This shortfall is attributed to several factors, including inadequate teacher training on multicultural issues, insufficient interactive learning opportunities, and the persistence of cultural stereotypes in the broader community. Furthermore, the traditional delivery methods of religious education may not fully engage students or effectively challenge pre-existing prejudices, leading to minimal behavioral change (Ibrahim, 2023). The gap between the intended curriculum outcomes and the actual attitudes of students poses a significant challenge for educators and policy makers alike. Without a thorough evaluation of the curricular content and its implementation, it is difficult to pinpoint the specific areas in need of reform. This study aims to critically assess how religious education influences students’ respect for diverse traditions, identifying the key obstacles and opportunities for enhancing curricular effectiveness. By gathering empirical data from multiple stakeholders, the research will offer evidence-based recommendations to bridge the gap between curriculum theory and practice, thereby promoting a more inclusive and respectful societal outlook (Adebayo, 2024).
