Background of the Study
Religious education plays a fundamental role in shaping ethical frameworks and influencing core life values. In Maiduguri LGA, Borno State, religious instruction is central to the educational experience and significantly impacts students’ perceptions of the sanctity of life. Many religious doctrines underscore the inherent value and dignity of every human being, promoting compassion, non-violence, and respect for life (Abubakar, 2023). In schools across Maiduguri, lessons are designed to instill an awareness of life’s sanctity by integrating religious narratives with moral discussions. Such teachings encourage students to appreciate the intrinsic worth of every individual and to act in ways that honor human dignity. Amidst the challenges posed by regional conflicts and socio-political instability, these values serve as a counterbalance to tendencies toward dehumanization and violence (Yusuf, 2024). Educational programs frequently incorporate discussions on ethical responsibilities and the moral implications of decisions that affect life and well-being. Recent research suggests that students who receive comprehensive religious education are more likely to adopt pro-life stances and advocate for the protection of human rights (Ibrahim, 2025). Despite these promising connections, there is limited empirical research specifically examining how religious education shapes students’ perceptions of the sanctity of life in Maiduguri LGA. This gap in the literature is significant because a deep respect for life is essential for the development of ethical citizens and for promoting peace in conflict-affected regions. By investigating the influence of religious instruction on life perceptions, this study aims to provide evidence-based insights into how moral education can contribute to conflict resolution and social cohesion. Understanding these dynamics is critical for developing educational strategies that reinforce the value of life and support the broader goals of peacebuilding and human dignity (Aminu, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
While the sanctity of life is a core tenet of many religious teachings, its influence on students' perceptions within the educational framework of Maiduguri LGA, Borno State remains under-investigated. Despite the extensive integration of religious education in local schools, there is a paucity of empirical evidence on whether these teachings effectively foster a deep-seated respect for life among students (Suleiman, 2023). In a region affected by social unrest and historical conflicts, conflicting messages about the value of life may arise, challenging the internalization of religious ideals. Instances of dehumanization and a diminished regard for human dignity have been observed, suggesting that the desired pro-life attitudes are not uniformly developed. This inconsistency raises concerns about the practical effectiveness of religious instruction in promoting ethical attitudes towards life. Without focused research on this issue, educators and policymakers lack critical data to guide curriculum reforms aimed at reinforcing the sanctity of life. Therefore, this study seeks to explore how religious education influences students’ perceptions of the sanctity of life in Maiduguri LGA. By examining the interplay between religious teachings and students’ ethical attitudes, the research aims to identify both the strengths and limitations of current educational practices. The outcomes will provide a basis for developing enhanced curricular strategies that ensure religious education effectively contributes to a culture that values every human life (Bello, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
1. To assess the impact of religious education on students’ perceptions of the sanctity of life.
2. To evaluate the effectiveness of religious teachings in promoting a respect for life.
3. To identify factors that influence the relationship between religious education and life sanctity perceptions.
Research Questions:
1. How does religious education affect students’ perceptions of the sanctity of life in Maiduguri LGA?
2. What religious values are most influential in shaping these perceptions?
3. How do external factors interact with religious education to influence the sanctity of life?
Research Hypotheses:
1. H1: Religious education positively influences students’ perceptions of the sanctity of life.
2. H2: Students exposed to comprehensive religious teachings demonstrate a stronger respect for human life.
3. H3: Socio‐political factors moderate the relationship between religious education and perceptions of life sanctity.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the role of religious education in shaping students' perceptions of the sanctity of life in Maiduguri LGA, Borno State. The research provides critical insights for educators and policymakers aiming to foster a culture that values human dignity and life. By identifying effective religious teachings and external influences, the study offers practical recommendations for curriculum development and peacebuilding initiatives. The findings are expected to contribute to ethical education and conflict resolution efforts in the region (Abubakar, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to investigating the effects of religious education on students’ perceptions of the sanctity of life in schools within Maiduguri LGA, Borno State. It focuses exclusively on this context.
