ABSTARCT
This study was carried out on parents’ educational attainment and occupational status as correlates of career preference among senior secondary school students using secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State as case study. To achieve this, four significant research quested were posed. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprise of SS2 students from the selected secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 170 respondents while 150 were received and validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency table and mean score. While the hypothesis were tested using Pearson Correlation statistical tool. The result of the findings reveals that there is a relationship between parents educational attainment and career preference of senior secondary school students. The findings also revealed that there is a relationship between parent’s occupational status and career preference of senior secondary school students. Furthermore, the study showed there is a relationship between sex and career preference of senior secondary school students. In regard to the findings, the study recommends that parents should cautiously avoid the tendency of pushing their children into pursuing those ‘wishful heights’ in their careers that they were unable to attain in a bid to accomplish their ‘own failings’. And parents should employ the assistance of professional career counsellors in helping their children to make intelligent career decisions in line with their aptitude and abilities.
