Background of the Study
Online quizzes and tests have become integral components of modern educational assessment, offering immediate feedback and fostering a continuous learning environment. In secondary schools in Lafia South LGA, Nasarawa State, the utilization of these digital assessment tools is gaining momentum as educators strive to enhance academic performance and track student progress more efficiently. Online assessments facilitate a flexible and interactive approach to learning, enabling students to engage with material at their own pace while receiving real-time insights into their understanding (Ogbonna, 2023). By providing instant feedback, these tools not only motivate students to improve but also help teachers identify areas that require additional attention. The integration of online quizzes and tests represents a significant shift from traditional pen-and-paper examinations, making assessments more adaptive to individual learning needs (Eze, 2024).

The adoption of online assessment tools in Lafia South LGA is driven by the need to incorporate technology into educational practices and to prepare students for a digitalized world. Digital assessments support a more dynamic learning process, allowing for varied question formats, including multiple-choice, short answer, and interactive simulations, all of which can enhance critical thinking and problem-solving skills (Akinola, 2025). However, the effective use of online quizzes and tests depends on reliable digital infrastructure and adequate training for both teachers and students. Challenges such as internet connectivity issues, technical glitches, and the digital divide may affect the reliability and validity of online assessments. Despite these hurdles, the potential benefits of digital assessments in improving student performance and fostering a culture of continuous learning have been well documented.

In Lafia South LGA, educational stakeholders are increasingly interested in understanding how online quizzes and tests can be optimized to support student learning. This involves examining the impact of these tools on academic performance, student engagement, and overall classroom dynamics. The integration of online assessments not only provides a platform for immediate evaluation but also encourages students to adopt a proactive approach to learning by continuously assessing their progress. Such innovations are essential in modern educational environments, where technology plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of learning (Ogbonna, 2023; Eze, 2024; Akinola, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing popularity of online quizzes and tests in secondary schools in Lafia South LGA, several issues impede their optimal utilization in improving student performance. One primary concern is the inconsistency in the digital infrastructure across schools, leading to uneven access to online assessment tools. Some schools experience frequent internet outages and limited availability of digital devices, which negatively affects the administration and reliability of online quizzes (Ogbonna, 2023). Furthermore, both teachers and students often lack adequate training to effectively navigate these digital platforms, resulting in errors, delays, and difficulties in interpreting immediate feedback (Eze, 2024).

Another significant challenge is the potential for technical glitches during assessments, which can undermine the validity of test results and cause student anxiety. The pressure to perform under digital conditions, combined with the fear of technical failures, may detract from the learning experience and adversely affect academic performance. Additionally, there is a concern that the focus on frequent online assessments may lead to a narrow emphasis on rote learning rather than fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This overemphasis on assessment can reduce the depth of student learning and engagement, as the immediate feedback provided may not always be sufficiently detailed to support long-term academic improvement (Akinola, 2025). The cumulative effect of these challenges raises critical questions about the overall impact of online quizzes and tests on student performance. Without addressing these issues, the potential benefits of digital assessments may remain underutilized, ultimately hindering the advancement of educational practices in Lafia South LGA.
