ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to examine the impact of the leadership and management on academic performance in secondary schools using Akoko South West LGA, Ondo State. Specifically, the study Find factors that determine the competency of school principal leadership and management. The study also analyze the impact of leadership and management on the academic performance of secondary schools. The study further examine the challenges that school management faces or has been facing in its endeavor to improve school academic performance. Lastly, the study find out how principal leadership and management style can improve academic performance. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. A total of 30 responses were validated from the survey. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings revealed that the factors that determine the competency of school principal leadership and management are principals academic qualification, principals experience and principals leadership traits. Also, the challenges that school management faces or has been facing in its endeavor to improve school academic performance are faculty Evaluation, attendance and discipline and curriculum design. Lastly,  principal leadership and management style can improve academic performance through motivating culture for staff and a high-quality experience for learners, developing the top skills needed by school leaders and shaping the conditions and the environment in which teaching and learning occurs. The study thereby recommend that  school administrators should find out the best leadership styles by involving all education stakeholders in the school in order to apply the most effective leadership style in the management of the institution.  Also, there is need to limit the personal characteristics of the principals and situational factors in the management of schools. The study finally recommend the school administrations should involve the teachers, students in decision making, delegation of authority so as to allow for excellent academic achievement and the most acceptable leadership style.
