Background of the Study
Technical and vocational education (TVE) has become a key pillar in Nigeria’s strategy for economic transformation, particularly in a context where job creation and skills development are critical. Between 2023 and 2025, Nigeria has witnessed increased investments in TVE programs designed to equip individuals with practical skills that are directly applicable in various industrial sectors (Ogunleye, 2023). TVE encompasses training in trades such as construction, information technology, automotive repair, and manufacturing, among others. The rationale is that by developing a workforce that is adept in technical and vocational skills, the country can reduce unemployment rates, boost industrial productivity, and foster economic diversification.
Government initiatives and private sector partnerships have played significant roles in revitalizing TVE, with new policies aimed at modernizing curricula, upgrading training facilities, and enhancing teacher qualifications. These efforts are intended to align TVE programs with the evolving needs of the labor market and global economic trends (Adeniyi, 2024). Moreover, TVE is seen as an essential tool for empowering marginalized groups, including youth and women, by providing them with marketable skills that can lead to sustainable employment and entrepreneurship. In this way, TVE not only addresses immediate labor market needs but also contributes to long-term socio-economic development.
Despite these promising developments, challenges remain in fully realizing the transformative potential of TVE. Issues such as outdated equipment, insufficient industry linkage, and societal perceptions that favor academic education over vocational training hinder the growth and effectiveness of TVE programs (Chinwe, 2025). These challenges necessitate a comprehensive evaluation of how TVE contributes to economic transformation and what measures are needed to optimize its impact.
Statement of the Problem
Although technical and vocational education is recognized as a driver of economic transformation, its impact in Nigeria is undermined by several persistent challenges. One significant problem is the inadequate alignment of TVE curricula with current industry requirements. Many TVE programs continue to operate with outdated equipment and teaching methods, which result in a skills gap between graduates and the demands of the labor market (Ibrahim, 2023). Additionally, limited collaboration between training institutions and industries restricts opportunities for practical, hands-on learning, further diminishing the employability of TVE graduates.
Another critical issue is the negative societal perception of vocational education as a second-choice option compared to traditional academic routes. This stigma reduces enrollment and investment in TVE programs, thereby limiting their potential contribution to national economic growth (Oluwaseun, 2024). Moreover, challenges in funding and resource allocation often result in poor maintenance of facilities and a lack of updated training materials, compounding the problem. The overall effectiveness of TVE in driving economic transformation is further hampered by insufficient policy support and fragmented implementation of initiatives across different regions.
This study seeks to investigate the systemic barriers that limit the impact of technical and vocational education on Nigeria’s economic transformation. By examining both institutional practices and broader societal attitudes, the research aims to identify strategies to bridge the skills gap, enhance industry linkages, and elevate the status of TVE. The ultimate goal is to provide evidence-based recommendations that can inform policy reforms and contribute to a more robust integration of TVE in Nigeria’s economic development agenda.
