Background of the Study

School sports infrastructure is a critical component of the educational environment, playing a vital role in promoting student engagement and overall development. In Lokoja Local Government Area, Kogi State, the availability and quality of sports facilities are increasingly recognized as determinants of students' participation in physical activities. Modern sports infrastructure, including well-maintained playing fields, gymnasiums, and specialized equipment, provides students with the necessary environment to engage in diverse sports activities, which in turn fosters physical fitness, teamwork, and school spirit (Okoro, 2023). Adequate infrastructure not only supports competitive sports but also encourages recreational activities, offering students multiple avenues for engagement and personal growth. Furthermore, the impact of school sports infrastructure extends beyond physical health. High-quality facilities contribute to improved student morale, enhanced social interaction, and a sense of pride in their school. When students have access to state-of-the-art sports amenities, they are more likely to participate actively in sports programs, leading to increased attendance, better academic performance, and overall satisfaction with the school experience (Akinwale, 2024). In contrast, inadequate or poorly maintained facilities can discourage participation and lead to disengagement, highlighting the importance of investing in robust sports infrastructure. Local educational authorities have noted a correlation between improved sports facilities and higher levels of student engagement, suggesting that infrastructure development is a key factor in promoting a vibrant school culture (Bassey, 2025). Despite these benefits, many schools in Lokoja continue to struggle with outdated or insufficient sports infrastructure, which hampers efforts to engage students in physical activities. This study aims to evaluate the current state of school sports infrastructure in Lokoja and its impact on student engagement. By combining quantitative assessments of facility quality with qualitative feedback from students and educators, the research will provide a comprehensive analysis of the role of infrastructure in shaping sports participation. The findings are expected to inform policymakers and school administrators on the critical investments needed to enhance sports facilities, thereby fostering a more active and engaged student body. Ultimately, the study seeks to contribute to the broader discourse on educational development and the role of physical resources in promoting holistic student engagement (Chukwu, 2024).

Statement of the Problem

Despite the acknowledged importance of school sports infrastructure in promoting student engagement, significant challenges persist in Lokoja Local Government Area, Kogi State. Many schools suffer from outdated, insufficient, or poorly maintained sports facilities, which negatively affect students' ability to participate in physical activities. The lack of proper infrastructure not only limits access to sports but also diminishes the quality of the physical education experience, leading to reduced student motivation and lower engagement levels (Eze, 2023). Inadequate funding, coupled with poor maintenance practices, further exacerbates these issues, resulting in facilities that fail to meet the needs of a growing student population. Moreover, the absence of modern equipment and safe, functional sports areas discourages students from actively participating in both competitive and recreational sports activities, thereby impacting their overall school experience (Folarin, 2024). Additionally, there is a scarcity of empirical research specifically examining the relationship between sports infrastructure and student engagement in Lokoja. Without reliable data, it is challenging for school administrators and policymakers to justify and implement necessary improvements in sports facilities. The current state of infrastructure is a barrier to fostering a culture of active participation and school pride. As a result, the potential benefits of sports in enhancing student well-being and academic performance remain under-realized. This study seeks to systematically evaluate the condition of school sports infrastructure in Lokoja and to determine its impact on student engagement. By identifying key shortcomings and exploring potential solutions, the research aims to provide actionable recommendations for infrastructure development and resource allocation (Gbenro, 2025). The findings will serve as a catalyst for informed policy decisions and targeted investments in school sports facilities.

Objectives of the Study

• To assess the current state of school sports infrastructure in Lokoja.

• To evaluate the impact of sports facilities on student engagement.

• To recommend improvements for enhancing school sports infrastructure and student participation.

Research Questions

• What is the current quality and adequacy of school sports infrastructure in Lokoja?

• How does the state of sports facilities affect student engagement in physical activities?

• What measures can be taken to improve school sports infrastructure to boost student participation?

Research Hypotheses

• H1: There is a positive relationship between the quality of sports infrastructure and student engagement.

• H2: Inadequate sports facilities negatively affect student participation in physical activities.

• H3: Improvements in school sports infrastructure will lead to increased student engagement.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it evaluates the role of school sports infrastructure in enhancing student engagement in Lokoja. The research provides critical insights into how quality facilities can improve participation in physical activities and contribute to overall student development. The findings will inform school administrators and policymakers on necessary investments and improvements in sports infrastructure. Additionally, the study adds to the limited body of research on the impact of physical resources on student engagement, offering a foundation for future studies and practical interventions. Ultimately, the research supports efforts to create more dynamic and supportive school environments for long-term success.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to evaluating school sports infrastructure and its impact on student engagement in Lokoja Local Government Area. It focuses solely on infrastructure within school premises and does not extend to community sports facilities. The research is confined to selected schools in Lokoja and considers only factors directly related to the physical condition and accessibility of sports facilities. Findings are specific to the local context and may not be generalized to other regions.

Definitions of Terms

• Student Engagement: The level of participation, interest, and involvement of students in school sports activities.

• Physical Activity: Any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that results in energy expenditure, including sports and exercise.
