Background of the Study

Adult education has emerged as a critical instrument for promoting financial inclusion, particularly in regions where many individuals remain outside the formal financial sector. In Bauchi Local Government Area, Bauchi State, adult education programs are being utilized to empower residents with essential financial knowledge and skills. These initiatives aim to demystify financial concepts, enhance numeracy, and provide practical training on managing personal finances, accessing credit, and making informed investment decisions (Mustapha, 2023). The drive to integrate financial literacy into adult education is based on the understanding that economic empowerment is closely linked to the ability to participate in the formal financial system. In Bauchi, where many people depend on informal economic activities, targeted financial education is seen as a pathway to improving economic stability and reducing poverty. The curriculum typically covers budgeting, saving, banking operations, and the use of digital financial services, aiming to equip learners with the tools necessary for effective financial management (Abubakar, 2024). Furthermore, these programs emphasize responsible financial behavior, which can lead to better economic decision-making and reduced vulnerability to exploitation. Despite these promising objectives, several challenges hinder the successful implementation of financial education in Bauchi. Limited resources, low literacy levels, and the lack of tailored content that addresses the local economic context are significant barriers. Socio-cultural factors, including mistrust of formal financial institutions and a reliance on traditional saving methods, further complicate efforts to promote financial inclusion (Suleiman, 2025). Additionally, the digital divide and infrastructural deficits limit the reach of modern financial services. As the local economy evolves, continuous educational interventions are required to keep pace with emerging trends in financial technology. This study seeks to assess the role of adult education in promoting financial inclusion, providing insights into how these programs can be optimized to enhance economic participation and empowerment in Bauchi.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the recognized importance of financial education in fostering economic empowerment, significant challenges remain in achieving financial inclusion in Bauchi Local Government Area. The primary problem is the limited accessibility and effectiveness of adult education programs that focus on financial literacy. Many residents, especially those engaged in informal economic activities, have minimal exposure to formal financial systems and consequently lack the skills to manage their finances effectively (Abubakar, 2024). The educational content provided is often generic and fails to address specific local financial challenges, resulting in a disconnect between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Infrastructural limitations, such as inadequate access to digital tools and financial services, further restrict the impact of these programs (Suleiman, 2025). Moreover, socio-cultural barriers, including a deep-seated mistrust of formal banking systems and adherence to traditional saving practices, impede the uptake of financial education. The fragmented nature of financial literacy programs, coupled with insufficient follow-up and support, has led to suboptimal outcomes in terms of financial inclusion. In summary, the problems of limited program accessibility, inadequate contextualization of content, and socio-cultural resistance significantly undermine the potential of adult education to promote financial inclusion in Bauchi. Addressing these challenges is critical to unlocking the full potential of financial education as a driver of inclusive economic growth.
