Background of the Study
Digital learning platforms have revolutionized the educational landscape by providing interactive and adaptable learning environments. In secondary schools in Yola West LGA, Adamawa State, these platforms are increasingly used to enhance various cognitive skills, notably problem-solving. Digital platforms incorporate simulation tools, interactive exercises, and real-time feedback mechanisms that foster analytical thinking and decision-making (Martin, 2023). The integration of such technology in the classroom has shifted the focus from rote memorization to active learning, allowing students to engage with problems in a dynamic and practical context (Olawale, 2024). As students navigate through virtual simulations and collaborative tasks, they develop the ability to approach complex challenges systematically. Despite these potential benefits, there are concerns about the consistency and effectiveness of digital learning platforms in developing robust problem-solving skills. Factors such as the digital literacy of students, the quality of instructional design, and the availability of technical support can significantly influence outcomes (Zhang, 2025). Furthermore, the pedagogical approaches employed by teachers in using these platforms are critical; without proper guidance, students may not fully realize the benefits of technology-enhanced learning. Recent research underscores the importance of aligning digital tools with curriculum objectives to maximize their educational potential. In Yola West LGA, initiatives to integrate digital learning platforms are often hampered by infrastructural challenges, including limited access to high-speed internet and inadequate device availability, which can restrict the interactive components crucial for developing problem-solving abilities. Nevertheless, when effectively implemented, digital learning platforms have the capacity to create a learner-centered environment that not only boosts cognitive skills but also encourages creativity and resilience in the face of complex challenges (Martin, 2023). The evolving nature of these platforms also necessitates continuous evaluation to ensure they meet educational standards and effectively address the learning needs of students. By critically examining the influence of digital learning platforms on problem-solving skills, this study seeks to provide comprehensive insights into how technology can be harnessed to foster essential life skills among secondary school students in Yola West LGA (Zhang, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the promising potential of digital learning platforms to enhance problem-solving skills among secondary school students in Yola West LGA, several critical issues persist. One major concern is the disparity in access to these platforms, as not all schools have equal access to the latest technology or high-speed internet connectivity (Olawale, 2024). This digital divide results in inconsistent learning experiences, where some students benefit from interactive problem-solving exercises while others remain confined to traditional teaching methods. Additionally, there is a noticeable gap in teacher preparedness; educators often lack sufficient training on how to integrate digital tools effectively into their instructional strategies, leading to underutilization of the platforms’ full capabilities (Martin, 2023). The problem is further compounded by the lack of standardized assessment methods to gauge the impact of these platforms on students' cognitive abilities, particularly their problem-solving skills. Without clear benchmarks and continuous monitoring, it becomes challenging to determine whether the observed improvements in problem-solving are directly attributable to digital learning interventions or other external factors (Zhang, 2025). Furthermore, while digital platforms are designed to foster analytical thinking, the design of some applications may not be sufficiently aligned with curricular goals, thereby limiting their effectiveness. The inconsistency in content quality and the absence of adaptive learning features can lead to a one-size-fits-all approach, which does not adequately address the individual learning needs of students. Consequently, the benefits of digital learning platforms remain unevenly distributed, potentially widening the gap between high-achieving students and those who struggle academically. This study aims to address these issues by exploring the extent to which digital learning platforms influence problem-solving skills and identifying the factors that hinder their optimal use. The research will provide valuable insights into the challenges of integrating digital tools into secondary education and propose recommendations to enhance their effectiveness in fostering critical thinking and problem-solving among students (Martin, 2023).
