Background of the Study
Maternal health is a critical aspect of public health, and improving health practices among mothers has far-reaching implications for community well-being. In Ganye Local Government Area, Adamawa State, adult education is increasingly recognized as a pivotal strategy for enhancing maternal health practices. Traditionally, cultural beliefs and low literacy levels have impeded the adoption of modern health practices, resulting in suboptimal maternal outcomes (Oluwafemi, 2023). However, adult education programs specifically designed to address health issues have begun to transform community attitudes by providing women with critical knowledge about prenatal care, nutrition, and hygiene. These programs not only impart life-saving health information but also empower women to make informed decisions about their well-being (Adesina, 2024). Recent research indicates that adult education can lead to significant improvements in maternal health by fostering a better understanding of reproductive health issues and the benefits of modern medical practices (Nwankwo, 2025). In Ganye, the focus on adult education in maternal health aims to bridge the gap between traditional practices and modern medical care. Programs have been tailored to address local cultural practices while introducing evidence-based health interventions. By leveraging community meetings, workshops, and digital media, these educational initiatives ensure that even women in remote areas have access to vital health information. Furthermore, the integration of peer education and support groups within adult education programs has created a supportive network that encourages the adoption of healthier behaviors. The community-driven approach of these programs facilitates a gradual yet impactful shift in attitudes towards maternal health, ultimately contributing to reduced maternal mortality and morbidity. The study seeks to examine the extent to which adult education influences maternal health practices in Ganye, considering factors such as literacy levels, cultural resistance, and the availability of health services. It also explores how these educational interventions can be optimized to better serve the needs of mothers in the area. By doing so, the research will offer insights into the potential for adult education to serve as a catalyst for improved maternal health outcomes, thereby contributing to the overall development of the community (Oluwafemi, 2023; Adesina, 2024; Nwankwo, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite improvements in maternal health globally, mothers in Ganye Local Government Area continue to face numerous challenges that hinder the adoption of modern health practices. Predominantly, low literacy levels and deeply entrenched cultural beliefs have contributed to the persistence of traditional, and sometimes unsafe, health practices (Oluwafemi, 2023). Many women are not fully aware of the benefits of prenatal care, proper nutrition, and hygienic practices, resulting in high risks during pregnancy and childbirth. Additionally, the limited accessibility of reliable health information and services further exacerbates the situation. While adult education programs have been initiated to address these challenges, their impact remains uneven due to factors such as insufficient funding, poor infrastructure, and cultural resistance from certain community segments (Adesina, 2024). The lack of comprehensive monitoring and evaluation of these programs means that the real extent of their impact on maternal health practices is not well documented. Consequently, health authorities and policymakers have limited data to guide further interventions. This study aims to investigate the effect of adult education on maternal health practices in Ganye, focusing on how educational initiatives can overcome cultural barriers and misinformation. It will examine the level of awareness among mothers regarding modern health practices and assess whether participation in adult education leads to a measurable improvement in maternal health outcomes (Nwankwo, 2025). By addressing these issues, the study seeks to provide evidence-based recommendations for enhancing the effectiveness of adult education programs in promoting safer maternal health practices.

  1. To assess the influence of adult education on the adoption of modern maternal health practices.

  2. To identify cultural and socioeconomic barriers affecting maternal health education.

  3. To propose strategies for optimizing adult education programs to improve maternal health outcomes.

Research Questions:

  1. How does adult education affect maternal health practices among women in Ganye?

  2. What are the primary barriers that limit the adoption of modern health practices?

  3. Which educational interventions are most effective in promoting maternal health?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Adult education programs significantly improve maternal health practices.

  2. Increased knowledge from adult education reduces cultural resistance to modern health practices.

  3. Integration of community support mechanisms in adult education enhances maternal health outcomes.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines how adult education can transform maternal health practices in Ganye. By identifying effective educational strategies and the barriers that impede progress, the research provides critical insights for health policymakers and educators. The findings will contribute to the development of targeted interventions aimed at reducing maternal mortality and improving overall health outcomes for mothers. Enhanced maternal health not only benefits families but also contributes to the broader social and economic development of the community (Nwankwo, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to exploring the effect of adult education on maternal health practices among women in Ganye Local Government Area, Adamawa State. It focuses solely on maternal health and excludes other health issues. Data collection is confined to local health centers and adult education programs within the area.

  2. Adult Education: Structured programs aimed at imparting knowledge and skills to adults beyond conventional schooling.

  3. Prenatal Care: Medical and educational services provided to expectant mothers to ensure a healthy pregnancy.
