Background of the Study
In recent years, the role of adult education in economic empowerment has gained considerable attention, particularly among artisan communities where formal education is often limited. In Sokoto North Local Government Area, artisans play a vital role in the local economy through their craftsmanship and entrepreneurial activities. However, many artisans struggle with low income levels due to a lack of formal training and access to modern business practices (Abdullahi, 2023). Adult education programs have been introduced as a means to bridge this gap by equipping artisans with skills in financial management, marketing, and technical innovation. These programs aim to transform traditional artisanal practices by incorporating contemporary techniques that can enhance productivity and market competitiveness (Hassan, 2024). Empirical studies suggest that when artisans participate in structured educational programs, there is a significant improvement in their income levels and overall quality of life (Ali, 2025). In Sokoto North, the potential for economic growth through adult education is compounded by the region’s rich cultural heritage in craftsmanship, yet the sector remains underdeveloped due to systemic challenges. The integration of adult education into artisanal development provides an opportunity to revitalize this sector by fostering innovation and business acumen among practitioners. Furthermore, such educational interventions are designed to address issues such as limited access to modern technology and outdated production techniques that often hamper income generation. Local government authorities and non-governmental organizations have collaborated to implement targeted adult education initiatives that are tailored to the needs of artisans, thereby promoting skill diversification and entrepreneurial mindset. These initiatives not only focus on technical skills but also on soft skills such as communication and problem-solving, which are essential for accessing broader markets. This study investigates the relationship between adult education and income enhancement among artisans in Sokoto North, highlighting both the challenges and opportunities that exist within the sector. By drawing on recent research and community-based data, the study aims to provide actionable insights for policymakers and stakeholders. It will examine how tailored adult education programs can foster economic resilience and drive sustainable income growth, ultimately contributing to regional development and poverty alleviation (Abdullahi, 2023; Ali, 2025; Hassan, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the promising potential of adult education programs to enhance the economic status of artisans, significant challenges persist in Sokoto North Local Government Area. Artisans face numerous obstacles including outdated techniques, limited business knowledge, and insufficient access to financial services, which collectively contribute to stagnant income levels (Abdullahi, 2023). Moreover, many artisans lack the formal education required to navigate modern marketplaces, resulting in a gap between traditional practices and contemporary economic opportunities (Hassan, 2024). The absence of a structured educational framework further exacerbates the issue, leaving artisans ill-prepared to adopt new technologies or innovative business strategies. This problem is compounded by the limited reach of current adult education initiatives, which are often under-resourced and fail to address the specific needs of the artisanal community (Ali, 2025). Furthermore, while there is anecdotal evidence suggesting that adult education can lead to improved income levels, there is a dearth of empirical data that quantifies this relationship within the context of Sokoto North. The lack of rigorous evaluation mechanisms means that policymakers and educational practitioners do not have sufficient evidence to scale up successful interventions. This study seeks to bridge this gap by systematically investigating how adult education influences income levels among artisans, identifying the key factors that hinder or facilitate economic improvement. It also explores the structural challenges—such as inadequate funding, limited access to modern resources, and cultural resistance—that may impede the successful implementation of adult education programs. By providing a comprehensive analysis of these challenges, the study aims to propose targeted recommendations for enhancing the effectiveness of adult education in improving the financial well-being of artisans (Abdullahi, 2023; Ali, 2025; Hassan, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the impact of adult education on the income levels of artisans.

  2. To identify key challenges faced by artisans in accessing quality adult education.

  3. To recommend strategies for integrating modern skills training into artisanal practices.

Research Questions:

  1. How does adult education affect the income levels of artisans in Sokoto North?

  2. What barriers hinder artisans from accessing effective adult education programs?

  3. What training strategies can improve income generation among artisans?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Participation in adult education programs leads to a significant increase in artisans’ income levels.

  2. Artisans who receive modern business and technical training report fewer income-related challenges.

  3. Integration of adult education with market-driven training improves overall economic performance.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it investigates the direct relationship between adult education and income enhancement among artisans. By examining the challenges and potential benefits of modern skills training, the research provides critical insights for policymakers, educators, and development practitioners. The findings aim to support the creation of tailored educational interventions that can uplift artisanal communities economically. Ultimately, the study contributes to a broader understanding of how adult education can serve as a catalyst for sustainable economic development in under-resourced regions (Ali, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to exploring the effect of adult education on income levels among artisans in Sokoto North Local Government Area, Sokoto State. It focuses exclusively on the economic impact within the artisanal sector and does not extend to other forms of employment or regions. Data collection is confined to local artisan communities and available training programs.

Definitions of Terms:
