Background of the Study
Adult literacy is a cornerstone for social empowerment and gender equality, significantly influencing women's rights awareness in communities. In Dutse Local Government Area, Jigawa State, the promotion of adult literacy has emerged as a transformative tool for advancing women's rights. Literate women are better positioned to understand their legal rights, access educational and employment opportunities, and participate in decision-making processes. Increased literacy among adult women fosters self-confidence and awareness of gender-specific issues, enabling them to challenge discriminatory practices and advocate for equitable treatment (Aminu, 2023).

The advancement of literacy programs has facilitated the dissemination of critical information regarding health, legal rights, and civic responsibilities, empowering women to take active roles in community development. With improved literacy, women are more likely to engage in dialogues about gender inequality and social justice, which are essential for driving progressive reforms. Furthermore, adult literacy initiatives provide a platform for women to learn about their rights and responsibilities, thereby strengthening community-based movements for gender equality (Ibrahim, 2024).

Recent educational reforms have incorporated digital literacy, which further enhances women’s access to global perspectives on gender issues and human rights. This digital inclusion has enabled women to participate in online communities, access legal resources, and connect with advocacy groups, thereby amplifying their voices in public discourse. The improved access to information has not only heightened awareness of women's rights but also fostered an environment where traditional gender roles can be critically examined and redefined (Olawale, 2025).

Overall, the relationship between adult literacy and women's rights awareness in Dutse highlights the pivotal role of education in achieving gender equity. By equipping women with the necessary skills to access, analyze, and disseminate information, literacy programs serve as catalysts for social change. This study aims to explore the impact of adult literacy on women's rights awareness, shedding light on how improved educational opportunities can contribute to broader societal reforms and the empowerment of women in Dutse. Enhanced literacy is pivotal in reshaping societal norms and empowering marginalized women (Fatima, 2023). Expanding literacy is crucial for reforming cultural norms and advancing women’s rights (Fatima, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to promote women's rights through education, many women in Dutse Local Government Area remain disadvantaged due to low levels of adult literacy. The gap in literacy skills among adult women limits their awareness of legal rights and their capacity to participate in socio-political processes. This lack of awareness perpetuates gender-based discrimination and restricts women's ability to access essential services, including healthcare, legal aid, and employment opportunities (Garba, 2023). Moreover, traditional societal norms and cultural practices continue to impede the progress of women’s rights, as many women are not equipped with the necessary literacy skills to challenge these practices effectively (Umar, 2024).

The current literacy programs often fail to address gender-specific needs, resulting in a continued marginalization of women in community development. Inadequate support systems, limited funding, and cultural resistance further exacerbate the problem, leaving many adult women isolated from the benefits of literacy. This situation not only undermines individual empowerment but also hinders broader societal progress toward gender equality. The disconnect between literacy initiatives and the promotion of women's rights has created a cycle where women remain uninformed about their rights, leading to continued social and economic disparities (Nuhu, 2025). Comprehensive literacy reforms are critical to advancing women’s rights (James, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:
• To investigate the impact of adult literacy on women's rights awareness in Dutse.
• To evaluate the effectiveness of current literacy programs in addressing gender-specific issues.
• To propose strategies for enhancing literacy to empower women in socio-political spheres.

Research Questions:
• How does adult literacy influence women's rights awareness in Dutse?
• What are the barriers to effective literacy education for women?
• Which strategies can improve the integration of women's rights education in literacy programs?

Research Hypotheses:
• H1: Increased adult literacy significantly enhances women's rights awareness.
• H2: Gender-specific literacy programs improve women's socio-political participation.
• H3: Lack of tailored educational content negatively impacts women's empowerment.

Significance of the Study
This study is important because it explores the critical link between adult literacy and women's rights awareness, emphasizing the need for targeted educational programs. By highlighting the benefits of literacy for gender empowerment, the research contributes to policy reforms and community development initiatives. The findings will assist stakeholders in designing interventions that address the unique challenges faced by women, thereby promoting social justice and gender equality. Ultimately, this study aims to empower women through education, enabling them to assert their rights and participate more fully in societal advancement (Garba, 2023; Umar, 2024). It fosters progress.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the impact of adult literacy on women's rights awareness in Dutse Local Government Area. It focuses exclusively on adult women and the literacy initiatives implemented in the region. The study does not consider literacy programs for men or those outside Dutse. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data and the influence of cultural factors that are not fully quantifiable.

Definitions of Terms:
