Background of the Study
In Kauru Local Government Area, Kaduna State, technical education has been increasingly recognized as a strategic tool for enhancing student participation in STEM fields. With the rapid pace of technological advancement, there is a growing demand for a workforce that is well-versed in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Technical education programs have been designed to provide practical, hands-on experience that bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application (Ibrahim, 2023; Suleiman, 2024). These programs expose students to modern technologies and innovative practices, thereby fostering a robust interest in STEM subjects. The integration of technical skills into the curriculum is seen as essential in preparing students for future careers that are centered on technological innovation and scientific discovery. Schools in Kauru have increasingly adopted project-based learning approaches, laboratory experiments, and industrial attachments, which have contributed to a gradual increase in student enrollment in STEM courses. However, despite these efforts, there remains a disparity in the level of participation among students. Socio-economic factors, infrastructural challenges, and cultural attitudes towards STEM education continue to affect student engagement (Adamu, 2023). Furthermore, the quality of technical education, including teacher training and availability of resources, is critical to its success in promoting active participation in STEM. Recent research suggests that when technical education is effectively implemented, it can significantly enhance problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and creativity—traits that are indispensable in STEM fields (Bello, 2023). Nevertheless, the challenges of outdated equipment, insufficient funding, and a lack of industry partnerships persist, limiting the full potential of these programs. This study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the factors influencing student participation in STEM fields as a result of technical education in Kauru. By examining curriculum design, resource allocation, and community engagement, the research seeks to offer actionable recommendations for enhancing technical education to better prepare students for the demands of the modern workforce (Chukwu, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
In Kauru Local Government Area, despite significant investments in technical education, student participation in STEM fields remains below expected levels. Many students, even after exposure to technical training, do not pursue further studies or careers in science and technology. This phenomenon is primarily attributed to inadequate infrastructural support, insufficient teacher training, and limited exposure to modern STEM practices (Olu, 2023). Additionally, socio-cultural factors and prevailing misconceptions about the difficulty and relevance of STEM subjects discourage many students from engaging fully in these fields. The disconnect between technical education programs and the real-world applications of STEM knowledge creates a barrier to student motivation and career interest (Adebayo, 2023). Furthermore, while government initiatives have sought to modernize technical curricula, the implementation has been inconsistent, with significant disparities between well-equipped urban schools and resource-constrained rural institutions (Nwachukwu, 2024). The problem is further compounded by the lack of robust partnerships between schools and local industries, which could otherwise provide practical exposure and mentorship opportunities. This study seeks to identify and analyze the key factors that hinder student participation in STEM fields despite the introduction of technical education programs. The findings are expected to shed light on critical gaps in the current educational framework and offer strategies to enhance the effectiveness of technical training, thereby increasing student engagement in STEM. Addressing these issues is vital for ensuring that technical education fulfills its potential in preparing a technologically competent workforce for the future (Umar, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the impact of technical education on student participation in STEM.

  2. To identify challenges that hinder effective engagement in STEM fields.

  3. To propose strategies to improve technical education programs and boost STEM participation.

Research Questions

  1. How does technical education affect student participation in STEM fields?

  2. What challenges limit effective engagement in STEM in Kauru?

  3. What improvements can be made to technical education to increase STEM enrollment?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Technical education positively influences student participation in STEM.

  2. Inadequate resources negatively impact STEM engagement.

  3. Strengthening industry partnerships enhances STEM participation.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides an in-depth analysis of the impact of technical education on STEM participation, offering critical recommendations for improving curriculum design and resource allocation. The insights aim to assist policymakers and educators in creating more effective educational strategies in Kauru. (Ibrahim, 2023; Chukwu, 2024)

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to examining the influence of technical education on student participation in STEM fields in Kauru Local Government Area, Kaduna State, and does not extend to other regions or educational sectors.

Definitions of Terms

  • STEM Fields: Disciplines involving science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

  • Technical Education: Education that provides practical and vocational skills.

  • Student Participation: Active involvement and engagement of students in academic and extracurricular activities.
