Background of the study
Environmental sanitation is a critical factor in public health and sustainable development. In Gusau Local Government Area, Zamfara State, adult education programs are being implemented to improve environmental sanitation practices among residents. These programs focus on imparting knowledge related to proper waste management, recycling, and the importance of maintaining clean surroundings to prevent disease outbreaks (Musa, 2023). By educating adults on environmental sanitation, these initiatives aim to foster behavioral changes that contribute to improved health outcomes and enhanced community well-being. The educational content is designed to be practical and interactive, enabling participants to learn through demonstrations, community clean-up exercises, and workshops that address local sanitation challenges. The integration of environmental education with adult learning has been identified as a critical factor in promoting sustainable practices, as it empowers individuals with the information and skills necessary to take proactive measures in their communities (Sani, 2024). Moreover, these programs emphasize the interconnection between a clean environment and overall quality of life, highlighting the economic, social, and health benefits of improved sanitation. The approach is also aimed at building community solidarity, as residents work together to achieve common environmental goals. Recent studies have shown that areas with robust environmental education programs experience significant improvements in sanitation practices, leading to a reduction in environmental pollution and associated health risks (Musa, 2023; Sani, 2024). Thus, adult education emerges as a potent tool in driving community-led initiatives for environmental sanitation, offering a pathway towards sustainable development in Gusau Local Government Area.

Statement of the problem
Despite various efforts to improve environmental sanitation in Gusau, many residents continue to practice poor sanitation habits, which contribute to public health challenges and environmental degradation. The existing adult education programs have not sufficiently penetrated all segments of the community, and there is a noticeable gap between awareness and actual practice (Musa, 2023). Factors such as limited resources, cultural resistance to change, and inadequate infrastructure impede the translation of learned sanitation practices into everyday behaviors. Many community members remain unaware of the broader implications of poor sanitation on health and the environment. Additionally, there is a lack of regular monitoring and follow-up to ensure that the knowledge acquired through these programs is sustained over time (Sani, 2024). This disconnect has resulted in persistent sanitation challenges, including improper waste disposal, open defecation, and inefficient recycling practices. Moreover, the programs often focus on theoretical aspects without sufficiently addressing the practical obstacles faced by residents. The failure to integrate hands-on training and community participation effectively limits the potential for widespread behavioral change. Addressing these issues is crucial to mitigate the adverse effects of poor environmental sanitation, which include increased disease incidence and reduced quality of life. Therefore, it is essential to evaluate the effectiveness of current adult education programs in promoting sustainable sanitation practices and to identify strategies for enhancing their impact in Gusau (Musa, 2023; Sani, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To evaluate the impact of adult education programs on environmental sanitation practices in Gusau.

  2. To identify barriers that inhibit the adoption of improved sanitation practices.

  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing the effectiveness of sanitation education.

Research questions

  1. How effective are adult education programs in improving environmental sanitation practices in Gusau?

  2. What are the main barriers to the adoption of improved sanitation practices among residents?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to overcome these barriers and enhance program outcomes?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Adult education programs significantly improve environmental sanitation practices.

  2. Cultural and infrastructural barriers are major obstacles to adopting improved sanitation practices.

  3. Community-based interventions enhance the effectiveness of sanitation education.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides critical insights into the role of adult education in promoting environmental sanitation. Its findings will inform policy and community initiatives aimed at improving public health and environmental sustainability in Gusau (Musa, 2023; Sani, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to examining the effect of adult education on environmental sanitation practices in Gusau Local Government Area. It focuses on the current programs and their direct impact on community sanitation behaviors.

Definitions of terms

  1. Environmental Sanitation – Practices that ensure the cleanliness of the environment to promote public health.

  2. Adult Education – Educational programs designed for adults to enhance their skills and knowledge.

  3. Sustainable Development – Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising future generations’ ability to meet their own needs.
