ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to examine mass media and its role in influencing the rate of crime among youths in the society. Specifically, the study was aimed at finding out if youths in Ota local government have interest in programs on the mass media, ascertain the kind of criminal activities youths are involved in Ota local government area, determine the impact of crime scenes on mass media on the rate of criminal activities among youths in Ota local government area, examine the influence of socio-demographic factors on youth participation in crime in Ota local government area, and find out the role of mass media in reducing the rate of crime among youths in Ota local government area. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. A total of 300 responses were validated from the survey. From the responses obtained and analysed, the findings revealed that television is a strong tool in fighting crimes amongst the youths. It was also discovered that people have benefited a lot from criminal programmes on television stations. The findings also shows that the residents of Ota LGA support the continuation of crime related programmes on mass media because it is effective in enlightening people fight against crime through the various segments. The study recommend there is a great and urgent need for the effective and efficient law enforcement, the government officials should make laws that can or will prevent Nigerian youths from getting involved in criminal activities and also the police officials should ensure these laws and order are being enforced; youths who are caught with in criminal acts should be arrested and prosecuted. This will serve as a lesson reference point to other youth who has likely possibilities of getting involved in crime in the future. Also, the mass media should continue broadcasting and showing programmes that discourages crime in the society since this goes a long way to enlightening the populace.
