Background of the Study
Adult literacy serves as a cornerstone for economic empowerment, particularly for vulnerable groups such as widows in Mubi North. In Adamawa State, widows often face significant socio-economic challenges, including limited access to employment, financial services, and educational opportunities. Adult literacy programs have been introduced as a vital intervention to empower these women by enhancing their reading, writing, and numeracy skills, thereby opening pathways to improved economic opportunities (Nguyen, 2023). The integration of literacy into adult education empowers widows by providing them with the tools needed to access information, engage with market opportunities, and participate more fully in community development initiatives (Garcia, 2024).

Recent studies conducted between 2023 and 2025 have demonstrated that increased literacy levels correlate strongly with improved economic outcomes among marginalized groups (Nguyen, 2023). In Mubi North, adult literacy programs are tailored to address the specific challenges faced by widows, including cultural stigma and limited financial knowledge. The programs incorporate practical modules on entrepreneurship, financial management, and vocational skills, ensuring that participants can translate their literacy skills into tangible economic benefits (Garcia, 2024). The role of adult literacy in this context extends beyond basic education; it also fosters self-confidence and social inclusion, which are critical factors in breaking the cycle of poverty and marginalization.

By engaging widows in structured literacy programs, local education authorities aim to provide a supportive environment that encourages lifelong learning and personal growth. The curriculum is designed to be accessible and culturally sensitive, incorporating local languages and real-life scenarios that resonate with the daily experiences of widows in the community (Nguyen, 2023). Furthermore, the involvement of community organizations and local leaders in program implementation ensures that the literacy initiatives are contextually relevant and sustainable. Overall, adult literacy has emerged as a powerful tool for economic empowerment, enabling widows in Mubi North to gain the confidence and skills necessary to improve their socio-economic status (Garcia, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Widows in Mubi North face entrenched socio-economic challenges that hinder their ability to achieve financial independence. Despite the existence of adult literacy programs, a significant number of widows remain illiterate or possess only basic literacy skills, limiting their access to economic opportunities and reinforcing their marginalized status (Garcia, 2024). One of the primary challenges is the inadequate coverage and reach of literacy programs, which often do not extend to the most vulnerable populations. The current educational interventions are insufficient in addressing the specific needs of widows, who require not only literacy but also practical skills that facilitate economic participation (Nguyen, 2023).

Furthermore, cultural norms and economic constraints often prevent widows from participating in literacy programs regularly. Many widows face social stigma and lack support from their communities, which further diminishes their chances of benefiting from these initiatives (Garcia, 2024). The inconsistency in program delivery and the absence of tailored content that addresses the unique challenges of widows exacerbate the situation. Additionally, the scarcity of follow-up mechanisms and support services means that even those who do participate in literacy programs often struggle to apply their new skills to improve their economic circumstances (Nguyen, 2023).

These challenges collectively hinder the potential of adult literacy as a tool for economic empowerment. Without a concerted effort to address these barriers, the cycle of poverty among widows in Mubi North is likely to persist. Therefore, there is a critical need for a comprehensive evaluation of current literacy programs and the development of strategies that specifically target the economic empowerment of widows (Garcia, 2024).

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it highlights the transformative potential of adult literacy in economically empowering widows. By examining program effectiveness and identifying key barriers, the research provides actionable insights for policymakers and educators. The findings will contribute to the development of tailored literacy interventions that promote financial independence and social inclusion among widows in Mubi North. Ultimately, this study aims to foster sustainable economic development and improve the quality of life for one of the most vulnerable groups in the community (Nguyen, 2023; Garcia, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
