Background of the Study
Point-of-sale (POS) systems are critical for ensuring swift and accurate transactions in the retail banking environment. Wema Bank has recently upgraded its POS technology to improve transaction speed and enhance customer experience. The new POS systems incorporate faster processing units, improved software interfaces, enhanced encryption protocols, and real-time connectivity that collectively minimize transaction delays (Adewumi, 2023). These technological upgrades are intended to reduce the incidence of transaction errors and improve the overall efficiency of retail operations. Enhanced POS systems also facilitate better data capture and analysis, enabling the bank to monitor performance and address operational issues promptly.

Wema Bank’s initiative is part of a broader digital transformation strategy that aims to modernize retail banking operations and drive customer satisfaction. The upgraded POS terminals integrate seamlessly with mobile payment solutions and digital wallets, reflecting the evolving landscape of financial transactions. Research indicates that faster and more reliable POS systems contribute significantly to higher customer retention rates by reducing waiting times and improving service consistency (Femi, 2024). Despite these improvements, challenges such as intermittent connectivity issues, compatibility with legacy systems, and staff training requirements remain. Continuous monitoring and periodic system updates are essential to ensure that the technological benefits translate into measurable operational improvements. This study investigates how the new POS technology impacts retail transaction speed and identifies factors that can further optimize system performance in a competitive banking market.

Statement of the Problem
Despite significant investments in POS technology upgrades, Wema Bank continues to face challenges related to retail transaction speed. Customers have reported occasional delays and transaction errors, indicating that the upgraded systems are not uniformly effective across all service points (Ikechukwu, 2024). Technical issues such as connectivity fluctuations, integration mismatches with existing systems, and insufficient training of frontline staff contribute to these inefficiencies. Such inconsistencies negatively impact customer satisfaction and the overall operational efficiency of retail banking services. Moreover, the high maintenance costs and periodic system downtimes further exacerbate the problem, reducing the anticipated benefits of the technology upgrades. The gap between the upgraded system’s potential and its actual performance highlights the need for a detailed investigation into the root causes of these issues and the development of targeted strategies to enhance retail transaction speed. This study aims to pinpoint these operational challenges and propose actionable solutions to optimize POS performance, thereby improving customer experience and operational efficiency (Olusola, 2023).
