Background of the Study

Branch network expansion is a longstanding strategy employed by banks to increase service accessibility and enhance market penetration. Union Bank of Nigeria has pursued an aggressive expansion strategy, establishing new branches in both urban and rural areas to broaden its service footprint. This initiative is aimed at providing customers with easier access to banking services, thereby promoting financial inclusion and driving customer engagement (Adeniyi, 2023; Oluwaseun, 2024). By increasing the physical presence of the bank, Union Bank seeks to build trust and offer personalized services that digital channels alone may not fully provide.

The expansion strategy is supported by rigorous market research that identifies high-potential areas based on demographic and economic factors. New branches are designed with modern infrastructure and are integrated with digital technologies, such as self-service kiosks and interactive ATMs, to ensure a seamless blend of traditional and digital banking services. This integration not only improves the customer experience but also enhances operational efficiency by streamlining service delivery processes (Chinwe, 2025).

Moreover, the presence of physical branches plays a critical role in educating customers about the bank’s digital offerings, facilitating the transition from conventional to digital banking. The bank’s investment in branch network expansion is also aligned with government initiatives aimed at increasing financial inclusion in Nigeria. This strategic approach helps to overcome geographical barriers and ensures that underserved communities gain access to essential banking services. The study explores the impact of branch expansion on service accessibility, evaluating both the benefits and the challenges associated with extending the branch network.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the strategic expansion of its branch network, Union Bank of Nigeria faces several challenges in maximizing service accessibility. A major concern is the substantial capital expenditure required to establish and maintain branches in remote and underserved areas, where infrastructure may be lacking (Oluwaseun, 2024). This high cost can limit the scalability of the expansion strategy, affecting its overall sustainability. Additionally, operational disparities between branches, such as variations in service quality and staff expertise, can lead to inconsistent customer experiences and undermine the bank’s efforts to build trust.

Integration challenges between traditional branch services and digital banking platforms further complicate the customer experience. In some regions, the digital capabilities of new branches are not fully utilized due to connectivity issues or inadequate training of personnel, resulting in a disjointed service delivery model. External factors, including regulatory changes and economic fluctuations, also impact branch performance, making it difficult to achieve uniform service accessibility across all regions (Adeniyi, 2023).

Moreover, the lack of comprehensive performance metrics to evaluate the success of branch expansion initiatives complicates efforts to determine their effectiveness in increasing market reach. Without standardized benchmarks, management struggles to identify gaps in service accessibility and address them proactively. These challenges underscore the need for a systematic evaluation of branch network expansion strategies to develop targeted interventions that optimize service delivery and ensure a consistent customer experience.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the impact of branch network expansion strategies on service accessibility at Union Bank of Nigeria.

2. To identify operational challenges affecting branch performance and integration with digital services.

3. To recommend strategies for optimizing branch expansion to enhance customer access.

Research Questions

1. How does branch network expansion affect service accessibility at Union Bank of Nigeria?

2. What operational challenges hinder the effective delivery of services across branches?

3. How can branch expansion strategies be optimized to improve service accessibility?

Research Hypotheses

1. H₀: Branch network expansion does not significantly increase service accessibility at Union Bank of Nigeria.

2. H₀: Operational challenges do not significantly affect branch performance and customer service.

3. H₀: Optimization strategies do not significantly enhance the effectiveness of branch expansion.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study examines the branch expansion strategy of Union Bank of Nigeria, using performance data, customer surveys, and field observations. Limitations include high capital costs and regional infrastructural disparities.

Definitions of Terms
