Background of the Study
Transparency in fee structures is a key determinant of customer trust and satisfaction in banking. United Bank for Africa (UBA) has undertaken an initiative to standardize its debit fee system across all service channels. This standardization involves the creation of a uniform fee schedule, the elimination of hidden charges, and the implementation of digital platforms to communicate fee information clearly to customers (Afolabi, 2023). By streamlining the fee structure, UBA aims to simplify customer decision-making and reduce disputes related to ambiguous charges. The bank’s move towards standardization is also aligned with regulatory expectations for greater financial transparency and accountability.
Digital tools play a crucial role in this process by providing real-time fee updates and interactive calculators that help customers understand the cost of transactions (Chinwe, 2024). The integration of these tools into online banking platforms and mobile apps ensures that fee information is easily accessible, thereby fostering a transparent environment. Additionally, standardized fees contribute to internal operational efficiency by reducing the complexity of fee reconciliation and auditing processes. However, while fee standardization has the potential to enhance transparency, challenges remain in integrating new systems with legacy technologies and ensuring consistent communication across all customer touchpoints (Okeke, 2025). This study examines the impact of debit fee system standardization on transparency at UBA, exploring both the benefits and the operational challenges inherent in the process.
Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to standardize debit fee systems, UBA continues to face challenges in achieving full transparency. A significant issue is the integration of the new standardized fee structure with existing legacy systems, which can lead to discrepancies between published fee schedules and actual charges applied during transactions (Ibrahim, 2023). These inconsistencies undermine customer trust and contribute to frequent fee-related complaints. Furthermore, while digital platforms provide detailed fee information, varying levels of digital literacy among customers may limit the effective communication of these details (Nwankwo, 2024). Additionally, balancing the need for transparency with the bank’s revenue targets remains a complex task, as aggressive fee standardization might adversely affect profitability. This study aims to analyze these challenges and propose strategic recommendations to improve the clarity and consistency of debit fee disclosures at UBA.
