Background of the Study
Technical education in secondary schools is pivotal for nurturing future engineers, technicians, and skilled professionals. In Potiskum Local Government Area, Yobe State, workshops and laboratories serve as essential hubs for hands‐on learning and skill development. Over recent years, there has been growing concern about the physical infrastructure supporting technical education. The availability, condition, and modernity of these facilities are fundamental to ensuring that students receive practical training that mirrors real industry conditions (Okoro, 2023). Research indicates that inadequacies in workshops and laboratories can lead to a significant disconnect between theoretical knowledge and practical skills application, thereby affecting students’ overall competence (Abubakar, 2024). In many cases, outdated equipment, insufficient maintenance, and limited space contribute to suboptimal learning experiences. As technology evolves rapidly, the demand for up‐to‐date technical education facilities has become more urgent. Modern workshops equipped with advanced tools can foster an environment where innovation and creativity are nurtured, preparing students for the challenges of a competitive labor market (Ibrahim, 2025).

Historically, technical education in Potiskum has faced challenges related to budget constraints and policy implementation delays. These challenges have had a lasting impact on the condition and availability of teaching aids in technical subjects. Interviews with educators reveal that many instructors struggle to deliver effective practical sessions due to the limited resources available (Okoro, 2023). Furthermore, there is a growing disparity between urban centers, where some schools boast relatively modern facilities, and rural or peri‐urban areas where resources remain sparse. This situation underscores the need for a comprehensive evaluation of the adequacy of workshops and laboratories. Such an assessment must consider the quality of equipment, the level of technical support available, and the alignment of these facilities with current industry standards. In addition, the study will explore the extent to which these facilities contribute to students’ hands‐on learning experiences, their readiness for technical careers, and the overall impact on educational outcomes. By examining infrastructural, managerial, and policy dimensions, this research aims to identify critical gaps and propose viable solutions for improvement. The integration of modern technology, enhanced maintenance protocols, and improved resource allocation is essential for sustaining technical education that is responsive to the demands of the modern world (Abubakar, 2024; Ibrahim, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
In Potiskum Local Government Area, the technical education system is hindered by the inadequacy of workshops and laboratories in secondary schools. Many schools suffer from aging infrastructure, obsolete equipment, and a lack of technical support. These deficiencies have led to a situation where students are unable to gain the practical experience necessary for success in technical fields. Educators report that the gap between theoretical teaching and practical application is widening, largely due to the poor condition of available facilities (Okoro, 2023). The limited availability of modern workshops means that even when curricular reforms are introduced, the lack of adequate laboratories undermines the effectiveness of these changes. Moreover, insufficient funding and administrative challenges further exacerbate the problem. These issues result in diminished student engagement, lower practical competency, and ultimately, a workforce that is unprepared for contemporary technical demands (Abubakar, 2024). Despite several policy initiatives aimed at improving technical education infrastructure, the pace of implementation remains slow, and many schools continue to operate with limited resources. The inadequacy of facilities not only affects student learning outcomes but also discourages potential technical talents from pursuing further education in these fields. This persistent challenge calls for a critical assessment of the current state of workshops and laboratories to determine the specific infrastructural and managerial gaps. Addressing these issues is crucial for ensuring that technical education in Potiskum aligns with modern industry standards and adequately prepares students for future careers. The study, therefore, seeks to investigate the condition of these facilities, the challenges associated with their maintenance, and the potential impact on students’ practical skills acquisition (Ibrahim, 2025). Identifying and understanding these challenges will be key to formulating effective policy recommendations and intervention strategies that can rejuvenate technical education in the region.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the current condition and adequacy of workshops and laboratories.
  2. To examine the impact of facility quality on students’ practical skills.
  3. To recommend infrastructural improvements aligned with industry standards.

Research Questions

  1. What is the current state of technical facilities in secondary schools?
  2. How do facility deficiencies affect student learning outcomes?
  3. What improvements can be made to align facilities with modern technical requirements?

Research Hypotheses

  1. H₀: The quality of workshops and laboratories does not significantly influence practical skills development.
  2. H₀: There is no significant relationship between facility adequacy and student engagement.
  3. H₀: Modernizing technical facilities will not lead to improved academic performance.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it highlights the critical role of physical infrastructure in technical education. By evaluating the adequacy of workshops and laboratories, the research provides stakeholders with evidence‐based recommendations for infrastructural upgrades. Improved facilities are expected to enhance practical training, thereby increasing student competence and employability. The findings will serve as a guideline for policymakers, educators, and funding agencies seeking to align technical education with current industry demands (Ibrahim, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to evaluating workshops and laboratories in secondary schools within Potiskum Local Government Area, Yobe State. It does not consider other forms of technical training facilities or regions outside Potiskum.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Workshops: Dedicated spaces equipped for practical, hands‐on training.
  2. Laboratories: Facilities designed for technical experiments and skill development.
  3. Technical Education: An educational branch focused on imparting specialized skills for technical and industrial careers.
