Background of the study
Effective teaching aids are essential for the successful delivery of vocational subjects in primary schools, as they provide the necessary tools to bridge the gap between theory and practice. In Chibok Local Government Area, Borno State, the availability of appropriate teaching aids for vocational subjects is critical to fostering an early interest in practical and skill-based learning. Recent educational reforms have underscored the importance of integrating vocational subjects into the primary curriculum, aiming to build foundational skills that can later be developed into specialized technical competencies (Mustapha, 2023). However, many schools in Chibok continue to operate with limited and outdated teaching aids, which hampers the delivery of interactive and experiential learning.
The significance of vocational subjects in primary education lies in their potential to stimulate creativity, problem-solving, and a hands-on approach to learning. When effectively supported by appropriate teaching aids—such as models, interactive tools, and digital resources—students are better able to grasp complex vocational concepts and develop the practical skills necessary for future career pursuits (Abdullahi, 2024). Despite these advantages, the current state of teaching aids in many Chibok primary schools is suboptimal, with many educators struggling to secure resources that are both relevant and up to date (Hassan, 2023).
The challenges in the provision of quality teaching aids are multifaceted. They include insufficient funding, inadequate distribution mechanisms, and a lack of systematic maintenance and updating of existing resources. These challenges are further compounded by the rapid technological advancements that render older teaching aids obsolete, thereby widening the gap between available resources and modern vocational requirements (Usman, 2023). The present study aims to critically evaluate the availability of teaching aids for vocational subjects in Chibok primary schools, examining the extent to which these resources meet the educational needs of young learners. By investigating the current state of teaching aids and identifying the challenges that impede their effective utilization, the study seeks to propose actionable recommendations that can enhance the delivery of vocational education at the primary level. This evaluation is expected to contribute to policy reform initiatives and guide future investments in educational resources, ensuring that primary schools in Chibok are well-equipped to foster practical skills from an early age (Hassan, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Primary schools in Chibok Local Government Area face a persistent challenge in providing adequate teaching aids for vocational subjects, which are essential for effective hands-on learning. Many institutions are hindered by a lack of modern teaching aids that can facilitate the practical aspects of vocational education. As a result, students are deprived of opportunities to engage in interactive and experiential learning, which is crucial for developing early vocational skills (Mustapha, 2023). The problem is exacerbated by limited budgetary allocations and a lack of systematic support for the procurement and maintenance of teaching aids. Educators frequently report that the available resources are outdated, insufficient, or entirely absent, thus undermining the quality of vocational instruction (Abdullahi, 2024).
The inadequacy of teaching aids not only limits the scope of practical learning but also contributes to a diminished interest in vocational subjects among primary school students. Without proper resources, teachers are forced to rely heavily on theoretical instruction, which does not adequately prepare students for the practical challenges of future vocational training (Usman, 2023). Furthermore, the absence of modern and effective teaching aids creates an uneven learning environment, where some schools may be better equipped than others, leading to disparities in educational outcomes. The long-term implications of this problem are significant, as early exposure to vocational training plays a critical role in shaping students’ attitudes towards technical education and career readiness. This study aims to identify the factors contributing to the shortage of quality teaching aids and to propose solutions that will enhance the practical learning experiences of students in Chibok. By addressing these challenges, the research seeks to improve the overall effectiveness of vocational education in primary schools and to ensure that all students have equitable access to the tools necessary for developing essential vocational skills (Hassan, 2023).

What are the main challenges in providing adequate teaching aids for vocational education?
How can the provision of teaching aids be improved to enhance practical learning outcomes?
Research Hypotheses
There is a significant positive impact of adequate teaching aids on student engagement in vocational subjects.
Insufficient funding is a major barrier to the provision of modern teaching aids.
Implementing a structured maintenance and procurement system will improve the quality of teaching aids.
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it evaluates the availability and quality of teaching aids for vocational subjects in primary schools in Chibok. The findings will inform educational stakeholders about current resource gaps and guide policy interventions aimed at enhancing practical learning. Improved teaching aids are expected to increase student engagement, foster early skill development, and promote equitable educational opportunities. The recommendations will support the optimization of resource allocation and help shape a more effective vocational education curriculum (Abdullahi, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to the evaluation of teaching aids for vocational subjects in primary schools within Chibok Local Government Area, Borno State. It focuses exclusively on resource availability and quality without extending to other subjects or regions.
