ABSTARCT
This study was carried out on the nutritional intake of primary school pupils and its impact on their academic performance using public primary schools in ijebu-ode as case study. To achieve this, three significant research objectives were formulated. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprise of parents and teachers of pupils in selected public primary schools in ijebu-ode, Ogun State. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 125 respondents while 110 were received and 100 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables and percentage. The result of the findings reveals that nutrition affect pupils in diverse ways which include; stabilize their energy, improve their minds, help them maintain a healthy weight, and help prevent mental health conditions. Hence, nutrition intake has a significant effect on pupils. The findings also revealed that nutrition intake positively affect pupil’s academic performance as it better their attendance, improve their behavior during learning, improve their concentration, and improve their cognitive ability. Hence, nutrition intake has a significant effect on pupils academic performance. In regard to the findings, the study recommends that Government and other stakeholder in education and bodies that see about children like UNICEF should consider giving the pupils breakfast or lunch at least once a day. Additionally, Home Economic teachers, community nutritionist and extension workers should enlighten parents on the type of food to be given to the children.
