Background of the Study
Career planning is a critical component of adolescent development, guiding students toward making informed decisions about their future. In Obi Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, informal education has emerged as an influential factor in shaping students’ career aspirations and planning abilities. Informal educational practices—such as career fairs, mentorship programs, vocational workshops, and interactive sessions with industry professionals—provide practical exposure and guidance beyond the confines of formal curricula (Okoro, 2024; Musa, 2023). These initiatives enable students to explore various career options, gain insights into job market trends, and understand the skills required in different professions. By engaging in experiential learning activities, students can identify their strengths and interests, which are crucial for making well-informed career choices. Informal education, therefore, serves as a bridge between theoretical knowledge and real-world applications, offering students a clearer vision of their professional futures. In Obi, local community organizations and educational institutions have collaborated to design programs that focus on career orientation and skill development. These programs often include hands-on activities, such as simulations of workplace scenarios, interactive discussions with successful professionals, and group projects that mimic real business challenges. Such experiences not only enhance students’ career planning skills but also foster critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. However, challenges exist in ensuring that these informal initiatives are accessible to all students and effectively integrated with the formal educational system. Variability in program quality, resource limitations, and a lack of structured follow-up can diminish the potential impact of informal education on career planning. Consequently, there is a need for systematic evaluation of these programs to identify best practices and areas for improvement. This study aims to investigate the impact of informal education on secondary school students’ ability to plan their career paths in Obi by examining the design, implementation, and outcomes of current initiatives. Through a mixed-methods approach that includes surveys, interviews, and focus groups, the research will provide comprehensive insights into how informal educational experiences contribute to career planning. The findings are expected to inform policy and practice, enabling a more integrated approach to career guidance in the educational sector (Suleiman, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the introduction of various informal education initiatives aimed at enhancing career planning among secondary school students in Obi, many students remain ill-prepared for the challenges of the modern job market. A significant problem lies in the inconsistent quality and limited reach of these programs, which often operate without a standardized framework. This inconsistency results in unequal access to career guidance, leaving many students without the necessary skills and information to make informed career choices. Moreover, the lack of structured feedback and follow-up in these programs makes it difficult to assess their long-term impact on students’ career trajectories (Musa, 2023). Educators have expressed concerns that while some initiatives show promise, their sporadic nature and limited integration with the formal education system hinder their effectiveness. Additionally, socioeconomic factors and regional disparities further exacerbate these challenges, as students from disadvantaged backgrounds may have less access to quality informal career guidance. The absence of a cohesive strategy for aligning informal educational practices with formal career counseling services creates a gap in the overall career development framework. This study seeks to address these issues by evaluating how informal education influences students’ career planning abilities in Obi. It will investigate the barriers to effective implementation, examine the correlation between informal educational experiences and career readiness, and propose strategies to improve program delivery. Ultimately, the research aims to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the role of informal education in career planning, providing evidence-based recommendations to bridge the gap between informal initiatives and formal career guidance (Okoro, 2024).

By addressing current gaps, the research will help empower students to make informed career decisions and better prepare for future employment challenges (Okoro, 2024).
