Background of the Study
Political participation is a cornerstone of democratic societies, and fostering active engagement among the youth is essential for sustainable governance. In Bakori Local Government Area, Katsina State, informal education has emerged as a catalyst for encouraging students to participate in political discourse. Unlike formal classroom settings that may focus primarily on theoretical aspects of civics and government, informal education offers practical, experience-based learning opportunities that engage students directly with current political issues (Muhammad, 2023; Suleiman, 2025). Community forums, debate clubs, and interactive workshops serve as platforms where students can explore diverse political perspectives, develop critical analytical skills, and express their opinions openly. These initiatives often involve collaboration with local political leaders, civic organizations, and educators who act as mentors, guiding students through the complexities of political systems and democratic practices. The dynamic nature of informal education fosters a sense of agency among students, empowering them to question established norms and actively contribute to political dialogue. In Bakori, where traditional political hierarchies have often limited youth engagement, these educational practices play a crucial role in bridging the gap between the younger generation and political institutions. Informal education encourages students to understand the socio-political context of their communities, thus enabling them to participate meaningfully in elections, public debates, and community decision-making processes. Moreover, by promoting discussions on governance, accountability, and civic responsibility, informal education helps to nurture a generation that is not only aware of political processes but also motivated to drive change (Nasir, 2024). Despite these promising developments, challenges remain in ensuring that the impact of informal education on political participation is both sustained and measurable. Issues such as limited resources, varying levels of political interest, and the occasional politicization of educational content can hinder the effectiveness of these programs. This study aims to investigate the influence of informal education on students’ political participation in Bakori by analyzing the methods employed, the extent of student engagement, and the overall impact on civic consciousness. The research will draw on both qualitative and quantitative data to provide a comprehensive evaluation of these initiatives, offering recommendations for enhancing youth political involvement through informal education (Muhammad, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of political participation for democratic development, students in Bakori continue to exhibit low levels of engagement in political discourse. Although informal education programs have been initiated to address this gap, their effectiveness remains uncertain. One significant problem is the lack of systematic integration of political education within informal settings, leading to sporadic and inconsistent outcomes. Many programs lack a cohesive curriculum, resulting in fragmented messages that do not fully empower students to engage with political processes. Additionally, resource constraints and limited training for facilitators further impede the successful implementation of these initiatives (Suleiman, 2025). Furthermore, political apathy among youth is often compounded by societal factors such as economic hardship and social marginalization, which reduce the incentive for active political involvement. The absence of measurable benchmarks to assess the impact of informal education on political engagement further complicates efforts to evaluate program effectiveness. This study seeks to explore these challenges by examining the influence of informal education on students’ participation in political discourse in Bakori. It aims to identify the gaps in current approaches and propose strategies to enhance the role of informal education in fostering civic awareness and political activism. Through interviews, surveys, and focus group discussions, the research will gather insights from students, educators, and community leaders to understand the barriers to effective political engagement. Ultimately, the study intends to provide a framework that can help integrate informal education into broader civic education initiatives, thereby empowering students to become active participants in their communities (Nasir, 2024).

Research Hypotheses

  • H₀: Informal education has no significant effect on students’ political participation.
  • H₁: Informal education significantly increases students’ participation in political discourse.
  • H₂: Enhanced mentorship within informal education programs leads to higher levels of civic engagement.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores how informal education can stimulate political participation among students in Bakori. Its findings will inform educators and policymakers on effective methods for integrating civic education into non-formal learning environments. The research will provide practical recommendations to empower youth in political processes, thereby contributing to a more vibrant and inclusive democratic society (Muhammad, 2023).
