Background of the Study
Innovation is a critical driver of economic and social progress, and educational systems are increasingly tasked with fostering creativity among students. In Olamaboro Local Government Area, Kogi State, informal education has emerged as a dynamic approach to nurturing innovative capacities. Unlike conventional education that often emphasizes rote learning, informal education leverages experiential learning, collaborative projects, and community engagement to stimulate creative thinking (Eze, 2023; Bello, 2024). Through hands-on activities, workshops, and real-world problem-solving scenarios, students are exposed to opportunities that challenge them to think outside the box. These non-traditional learning environments encourage experimentation and risk-taking, key ingredients for innovation. Local initiatives, such as maker spaces, cultural programs, and entrepreneurship clubs, have been introduced to complement formal curricula and provide platforms for idea generation and creative expression (Okoro, 2025). Moreover, informal education in Olamaboro emphasizes mentorship and peer-to-peer interactions, which help students gain diverse perspectives and build networks that are essential for collaborative innovation. The emphasis on creativity is not only about generating new ideas but also about learning to implement them effectively. By engaging in projects that require critical analysis and creative problem solving, students learn to navigate challenges and adapt to changing environments. This process also builds resilience and an iterative mindset, which are crucial for innovation in today’s fast-paced world. However, despite these promising developments, challenges persist in integrating informal educational practices into the mainstream educational framework. There is often a lack of standardized methods for assessing innovative capacity, and the support systems required to sustain these initiatives are sometimes inadequate. Furthermore, disparities in resource availability across different schools in Olamaboro hinder the equitable implementation of innovative programs. This study aims to critically appraise the role of informal education in enhancing students’ capacity for innovation by examining program structures, resource allocation, and the impact on student outcomes. By combining quantitative assessments with qualitative insights, the research will identify best practices and recommend strategies to improve the overall innovation ecosystem in Olamaboro. The ultimate goal is to develop a replicable model that demonstrates how informal education can effectively supplement formal instruction to produce a generation of innovative thinkers poised to contribute to socio-economic development (James, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of innovation in driving socio-economic development, many educational institutions in Olamaboro continue to struggle with fostering creativity among students. The problem is compounded by an over-reliance on traditional teaching methods that prioritize theoretical knowledge over practical application. Informal education initiatives designed to promote innovation often operate in isolation and without adequate resources, making it difficult to measure their long-term impact. Many students do not receive sufficient exposure to creative problem-solving exercises, and the lack of a standardized evaluation framework has resulted in varied program effectiveness (Chukwu, 2023). Additionally, educators are frequently undertrained in implementing informal, innovation-driven methodologies, leading to inconsistent outcomes across different schools. These challenges contribute to a gap between the potential of informal education to enhance innovative capacity and the reality of its implementation in the region. Consequently, students may graduate without the necessary skills to compete in a rapidly evolving global economy. This study seeks to bridge that gap by evaluating the current informal educational practices aimed at fostering innovation. It will investigate the factors that impede or promote creative capacity development, assess the role of mentorship and peer interaction, and explore how these programs can be better integrated with formal curricula. Ultimately, the study aspires to offer practical recommendations for policymakers, educators, and community leaders to optimize informal education models that effectively nurture innovative thinking among students (Ibrahim, 2025).

This study is significant as it explores how informal education can foster innovation among students, a critical skill for future economic development in Olamaboro. Its findings will guide educators and policymakers in designing programs that emphasize creative problem-solving and experiential learning. By highlighting effective practices and pinpointing areas for improvement, the research will help bridge the gap between theoretical instruction and practical innovation, thereby preparing students to meet the challenges of a competitive global economy (Eze, 2023).
