Background of the Study
Independent learning is a cornerstone of academic success and lifelong learning, empowering students to take charge of their educational journey. In Isiala Mbano Local Government Area, Imo State, traditional teaching methods often prioritize teacher-led instruction, leaving limited room for cultivating autonomous learning habits. Informal education offers a viable alternative by providing flexible, learner-centered opportunities that encourage self-directed inquiry and problem-solving. Through community workshops, peer study groups, and mentorship programs, informal education facilitates environments where students can explore topics at their own pace, develop critical thinking skills, and foster a sense of responsibility for their own learning (Okoro, 2023; Nwankwo, 2024).
The informal educational setting is particularly advantageous for nurturing independent learning because it emphasizes experiential knowledge over rote memorization. In these settings, students are encouraged to identify their own learning needs and seek resources that address their interests, thereby promoting a more personalized educational experience. Research indicates that when students engage in self-directed learning activities, they not only acquire knowledge more effectively but also develop a higher level of motivation and confidence in their abilities (Chukwu, 2023). Moreover, the integration of digital tools and community-based resources in informal education further enriches the learning experience, enabling students to access a wealth of information and collaborate with peers beyond the confines of the classroom.
In Isiala Mbano, various informal education initiatives have been introduced to complement the formal curriculum, including local study circles, online learning forums, and interactive community projects. These programs are designed to bridge the gap between conventional teaching methods and the dynamic needs of modern learners. By fostering environments that support independent inquiry and critical reflection, informal education plays a crucial role in preparing students for the challenges of higher education and the workforce. The current study aims to evaluate the impact of these informal educational practices on the development of independent learning skills among students, providing insights into how these approaches can be integrated into formal education systems for improved academic outcomes (Amadi, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of independent learning skills, many students in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area continue to rely heavily on teacher-centered instruction, which limits their ability to engage in self-directed study. The traditional educational system, with its standardized curricula and rigid classroom structures, often does not encourage the development of autonomous learning behaviors. This reliance on formal instruction hampers students’ ability to think critically and independently, making them less prepared for the demands of higher education and the rapidly changing job market (Eze, 2023).
Although informal education initiatives have been introduced in the region, their effectiveness in fostering independent learning remains under-explored. Many of these initiatives are implemented on an ad hoc basis without a systematic framework to assess their impact. As a result, there is limited empirical evidence demonstrating how informal education contributes to the development of self-directed learning skills. This gap in the literature is particularly concerning given the growing need for independent learning in a digital and globalized world (Ifeanyi, 2024).
Furthermore, socio-cultural factors, such as parental expectations and traditional educational values, often discourage students from pursuing independent study. The competitive academic environment further exacerbates this issue, as students may prioritize exam performance over developing long-term learning strategies. The lack of structured opportunities for independent learning in formal settings, combined with the sporadic nature of informal initiatives, creates a significant barrier to cultivating autonomous learners. Therefore, this study seeks to investigate the impact of informal education on students’ independent learning skills, with the aim of identifying effective practices that can be systematically integrated into the educational framework (Obi, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to exploring the impact of informal education on students’ independent learning skills in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area, Imo State. It does not address other aspects of learning or extend to other regions.
