Background of the Study
Entrepreneurship is increasingly recognized as a key driver of economic growth and innovation, particularly in regions where traditional employment opportunities may be limited. Informal education, with its focus on experiential and self-directed learning, has emerged as a critical tool for fostering entrepreneurial mindsets among students. In Kontagora Local Government Area, Niger State, various informal educational initiatives—such as startup workshops, mentorship from local business leaders, and peer-to-peer networking events—have been implemented to encourage creative thinking, risk-taking, and innovation (Umar, 2023). These programs provide students with practical insights into business operations, financial literacy, and market analysis, enabling them to identify and capitalize on opportunities within their communities. Informal education in this context is characterized by its flexibility and adaptability, allowing learners to experiment with entrepreneurial ideas without the constraints of a traditional classroom setting. This type of learning environment supports the development of critical soft skills, such as problem solving, resilience, and adaptability, which are essential for entrepreneurial success (Garba, 2024). Moreover, the localized focus of these initiatives ensures that the content is tailored to the socio-economic realities of Kontagora, making it highly relevant and impactful. However, despite the potential benefits, there remains a gap in empirical research on how informal education influences the development of an entrepreneurial mindset among students. Many students demonstrate interest in entrepreneurship, yet there is limited evidence on the extent to which informal educational experiences translate into the confidence and skills necessary to start and sustain a business. Factors such as resource constraints, limited access to experienced mentors, and insufficient practical exposure have been cited as impediments to effective entrepreneurial learning (Aminu, 2025). This study aims to investigate the role of informal education in fostering an entrepreneurial mindset among students in Kontagora Local Government Area. It will explore the various mechanisms through which experiential learning influences creativity, risk tolerance, and innovative thinking, thereby contributing to a more robust understanding of the interplay between informal education and entrepreneurship (Umar, 2023; Garba, 2024; Aminu, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
In Kontagora Local Government Area, the drive toward entrepreneurship is hampered by the limited capacity of existing educational frameworks to nurture innovative thinking and business acumen among students. Although informal education initiatives such as startup workshops and mentorship programs have been introduced, there is an observable disconnect between the theoretical knowledge provided and the practical skills required to initiate and sustain entrepreneurial ventures. Many students exhibit enthusiasm for entrepreneurship but lack the necessary confidence, problem-solving skills, and market insights to transform their ideas into viable business ventures. This gap is further compounded by challenges such as inadequate access to capital, insufficient exposure to successful entrepreneurial role models, and limited opportunities for hands-on experience (Umar, 2023). Furthermore, while informal educational programs are designed to offer flexible and context-specific learning opportunities, the absence of standardized evaluation mechanisms makes it difficult to ascertain their true impact on fostering an entrepreneurial mindset. Consequently, there is a need to systematically examine how these informal learning experiences influence students’ entrepreneurial attitudes and competencies. This study seeks to address these issues by investigating the specific contributions of informal education to the development of entrepreneurial mindsets. By identifying the factors that either facilitate or hinder entrepreneurial learning, the research aims to provide actionable recommendations for enhancing the effectiveness of informal educational interventions in Kontagora Local Government Area (Garba, 2024; Aminu, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of informal education on the development of entrepreneurial mindsets among students.

This study is significant as it offers insights into how informal education can be harnessed to foster entrepreneurial mindsets. The findings will aid educators, policymakers, and community leaders in designing programs that stimulate innovation and practical business skills among students in Kontagora Local Government Area (Garba, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
