Background of the study
Moral education is a fundamental aspect of personal and social development, and in Katsina Local Government Area, informal education has emerged as a critical tool in shaping students’ moral values. Informal education in this context encompasses community programs, cultural storytelling, religious gatherings, and mentorship sessions, which collectively contribute to the moral and ethical development of students. Unlike formal education, which is often characterized by structured curricula and standardized testing, informal education provides a flexible, context-driven approach to nurturing virtues such as honesty, responsibility, empathy, and respect. These non-formal learning experiences are particularly valuable in a region where traditional values and cultural norms play a significant role in everyday life (Abubakar, 2023).

The unique socio-cultural fabric of Katsina fosters an environment where moral education is interwoven with community traditions and practices. Informal educational settings allow students to observe and emulate positive behaviors through real-life interactions with community leaders, elders, and peers. This experiential learning method has been linked to the development of strong moral character and ethical reasoning, which are essential for personal growth and societal harmony. Research suggests that when moral values are reinforced outside the conventional classroom setting, students are more likely to internalize these principles and apply them in their daily lives (Musa, 2024).

In Katsina, the reliance on informal education to promote moral values is further reinforced by community-driven initiatives that emphasize the importance of ethical behavior and social responsibility. These programs often involve interactive sessions where students discuss moral dilemmas, engage in role-playing, and participate in community service projects. Such activities not only enhance students’ moral reasoning but also provide them with practical tools to navigate ethical challenges. The study aims to evaluate how these informal educational practices influence students' moral values and contribute to their overall character development. By examining the effectiveness of various informal approaches, this research seeks to identify best practices that can be adopted to strengthen moral education in both formal and informal settings (Ibrahim, 2025).

Furthermore, this study will investigate the challenges and limitations associated with relying on informal education for moral development. It will consider factors such as the variability in program quality, cultural differences, and the extent to which informal education complements formal moral instruction. The findings are expected to inform policymakers, educators, and community leaders on how to optimize the role of informal education in shaping students’ moral values and fostering a more ethically conscious society.

Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized benefits of informal education in shaping moral values, several challenges impede its effective implementation in Katsina Local Government Area. One major problem is the lack of a structured framework to consistently deliver moral education through informal channels. While community and religious leaders play a pivotal role in moral guidance, the variability in their approaches and the absence of standardized methods lead to inconsistencies in moral value formation among students (Salihu, 2023). Additionally, external influences such as media exposure and peer pressure may counteract the moral teachings imparted through informal education, further complicating the development of a unified moral outlook.

Another significant challenge is the limited collaboration between formal educational institutions and community-based programs. Without a cohesive strategy to integrate moral education across both formal and informal settings, there exists a disconnect that can undermine the overall moral development of students. Moreover, resource constraints and inadequate training for facilitators of informal moral education exacerbate the problem, resulting in sporadic and less impactful interventions. This inconsistency hinders the ability of informal education to effectively instill lasting moral values among students (Bello, 2024).

Furthermore, the influence of cultural and socio-economic factors may result in disparities in moral education outcomes. Some students may benefit from strong community support systems, while others might not receive adequate guidance due to varying levels of community involvement or resource availability. Addressing these issues is essential to ensure that informal education can consistently and effectively contribute to the moral development of all students in the area (Aminu, 2025).

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines the role of informal education in shaping moral values, offering insights into how community-based interventions can complement formal moral instruction. The findings will assist educators, policymakers, and community leaders in designing programs that consistently nurture ethical behavior and social responsibility among students. By addressing the challenges and highlighting effective practices, the research aims to contribute to a more ethically grounded society (Olayinka, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to evaluating the role of informal education in shaping students’ moral values in Katsina Local Government Area, Katsina State. It does not extend to other regions or educational levels.
