Background of the study
Personal hygiene is a fundamental aspect of public health and individual well-being. In Bali Local Government Area, Taraba State, informal education initiatives have been instrumental in promoting proper hygiene practices among students. These initiatives—ranging from community health workshops, peer-led hygiene campaigns, school clubs, to interactive radio programs—offer practical, culturally sensitive approaches to educating young people about the importance of personal cleanliness (Okoro, 2023). Informal education in this area leverages local customs and traditional knowledge to make hygiene practices relevant and accessible. By utilizing storytelling, demonstrations, and community role models, these programs not only disseminate information but also foster behavioral change that is vital for preventing communicable diseases (Ifeanyi, 2024).

The approach is holistic, integrating modern health guidelines with indigenous practices that resonate with local communities. As a result, students are more likely to adopt positive hygiene habits, such as regular hand washing, proper sanitation, and personal grooming. Such practices contribute to improved health outcomes and create a ripple effect within the community. Moreover, informal educational settings encourage active participation, critical discussion, and shared responsibility, allowing students to internalize hygiene practices and become advocates for public health (Okoro, 2023). Despite these positive indicators, there is limited empirical research evaluating the overall influence of informal education on personal hygiene behaviors among students in Bali. This study aims to bridge that gap by critically appraising the effectiveness of informal education in shaping students’ approaches to personal hygiene, thereby identifying best practices and areas for improvement (Ifeanyi, 2024).

Statement of the problem
In Bali Local Government Area, despite the existence of various informal education programs aimed at promoting personal hygiene, there remains a significant challenge in ensuring consistent behavioral change among students. Many students continue to exhibit poor hygiene practices, which can be attributed to inconsistencies in program delivery, limited reinforcement of healthy behaviors at home, and socio-cultural barriers that hinder the adoption of modern hygiene standards (Ifeanyi, 2024). While informal education initiatives have successfully raised awareness about the importance of personal cleanliness, the translation of this awareness into sustained behavioral change is not uniform across the community. Inconsistencies in the quality and frequency of hygiene education have resulted in mixed outcomes, with some students adopting recommended practices while others revert to traditional habits that may be detrimental to public health.

Furthermore, the lack of standardized evaluation metrics makes it difficult to ascertain the long-term impact of these informal interventions on personal hygiene behaviors. Without robust assessment tools, it is challenging to identify which aspects of the informal programs are most effective and which require enhancement. This study seeks to address these issues by systematically evaluating the influence of informal education on students’ hygiene practices in Bali. It will examine the factors that facilitate or impede the adoption of proper personal hygiene and offer recommendations to improve the design and delivery of these initiatives. Resolving these challenges is essential to promote better health outcomes and reduce the incidence of hygiene-related illnesses among students (Okoro, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  • To evaluate the impact of informal education on students’ personal hygiene practices.

  • To identify effective informal educational strategies for promoting hygiene.

  • To recommend improvements for enhancing the sustainability of hygiene education programs.

Research questions:

  • How does informal education influence students’ approach to personal hygiene in Bali?

  • What are the challenges in adopting proper hygiene practices through informal education?

  • Which informal educational methods are most effective in improving personal hygiene?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Informal education significantly improves students’ personal hygiene practices.

  • H2: There is a positive correlation between participation in informal hygiene programs and sustained healthy behaviors.

  • H3: Community-based interventions in informal education lead to better hygiene outcomes.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it appraises the influence of informal education on improving personal hygiene among students, a critical public health issue. By identifying successful strategies and addressing challenges, the research will inform educators, health professionals, and policymakers about effective methods for promoting hygiene practices. The findings aim to enhance program design and implementation, contributing to reduced incidence of hygiene-related illnesses and improved community health overall (Okoro, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study focuses exclusively on informal educational initiatives in Bali Local Government Area that address personal hygiene among students. It does not cover formal health education curricula or programs in other areas. The research is limited to current practices and their immediate impact.

Definitions of terms:

  • Informal Education: Learning through non-curricular, community-based methods.

  • Personal Hygiene: Practices that promote cleanliness and prevent disease.

  • Behavioral Change: The process by which individuals adopt and maintain new, health-promoting behaviors.
