Background of the study
Time management and punctuality are crucial skills that influence academic success and professional efficiency. In Keana Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, informal education has increasingly been recognized as a means of cultivating time-consciousness among secondary school students. Informal educational activities such as peer group discussions, mentorship sessions, interactive workshops, and digital time-management challenges provide practical experiences that reinforce the importance of time management (Obiora, 2023). These activities offer a flexible learning environment where students can learn about prioritizing tasks, setting goals, and adhering to schedules, skills that are often overlooked in the conventional curriculum.
The localized approach in Keana integrates cultural norms and community values with modern time-management techniques. For example, community leaders and educators use storytelling and role-playing to illustrate the consequences of time mismanagement and the benefits of punctuality. Such interactive methods help students internalize the concept of time as a valuable resource, thereby fostering a sense of discipline and responsibility (Obiora, 2023; Nwankwo, 2024). This study, therefore, aims to assess the impact of informal education on time-consciousness among secondary school students in Keana, exploring the relationship between informal learning experiences and students’ ability to manage time effectively. By addressing these issues, the research seeks to provide actionable insights into how informal education can be optimized to develop essential life skills that contribute to academic achievement and future professional success (Nwankwo, 2024).
Statement of the problem
In Keana Local Government Area, while informal education initiatives are designed to promote time-consciousness among secondary school students, significant challenges persist in realizing their intended outcomes. Despite various interactive programs aimed at improving time management, many students continue to exhibit poor punctuality and time organization skills. The inconsistency in program delivery, limited follow-up support, and the absence of standardized evaluation criteria contribute to this persistent issue. Consequently, the positive impact of these informal education initiatives is often diluted by factors such as varying levels of student engagement, socio-cultural attitudes towards time, and resource constraints (Obiora, 2023).
Furthermore, the diverse approaches used in informal education—ranging from peer mentoring to digital challenges—result in uneven exposure and differing degrees of influence on student behavior. This fragmentation makes it difficult to identify which methods are most effective in fostering time-consciousness. The lack of a cohesive framework for measuring the outcomes of these initiatives further complicates the assessment of their overall effectiveness. As a result, educators and policymakers are left with limited evidence on which to base improvements or scale successful programs. This study seeks to address these challenges by systematically investigating the factors that influence time-consciousness among students exposed to informal education in Keana. It will explore the relationship between specific informal educational practices and measurable improvements in punctuality and time management, providing recommendations for enhancing program efficacy (Nwankwo, 2024).

Significance of the study

The findings will help in developing targeted interventions that integrate time management strategies into informal educational programs, thereby enhancing student discipline and productivity. Scope and limitations of the study:
This study focuses exclusively on informal educational initiatives in Keana Local Government Area related to promoting time-consciousness among secondary school students. It does not consider formal time management curricula or programs in other regions. The research is limited to current practices and observable outcomes.
