Background of the Study
Point-of-sale (POS) systems are essential for executing retail transactions efficiently and reliably. Wema Bank has implemented a series of reliability enhancements to its POS systems, including hardware upgrades, software optimization, and improved connectivity protocols, to ensure faster transaction processing and reduced errors (Ibrahim, 2023). These enhancements aim to minimize downtime and enhance the overall customer experience in retail banking. The bank’s strategy involves real-time performance monitoring and automated diagnostic tools that enable proactive maintenance and prompt resolution of technical issues (Olalekan, 2024).

Improved POS system reliability translates into quicker transaction times, reduced queue lengths, and greater customer satisfaction. In addition, the upgrades incorporate robust security features that protect against fraud and unauthorized access, thereby strengthening customer trust. These technological improvements support the bank’s broader goal of streamlining retail operations and reducing operational costs. The data collected from the enhanced POS systems allows for continuous performance evaluation, facilitating ongoing optimization of service delivery (Adeniran, 2025).

However, despite these advancements, challenges persist in achieving uniform performance across all retail locations. Integration issues with legacy systems, regional differences in network infrastructure, and varying levels of technical support can compromise the overall reliability of POS devices. This study evaluates the impact of POS system reliability enhancements on retail service at Wema Bank, assessing both the operational benefits and the challenges encountered during implementation.

Statement of the Problem
Even with recent POS system upgrades, Wema Bank continues to face service reliability challenges that affect retail customer satisfaction. One major problem is the inconsistent integration of the new POS technologies with existing legacy systems, resulting in data mismatches and processing delays (Ibrahim, 2023). Regional variability in network connectivity further exacerbates these issues, leading to uneven transaction speeds and occasional system outages (Olalekan, 2024). Moreover, the high costs associated with system maintenance and limited technical support in certain locations hinder the full realization of the reliability enhancements.

These integration and support challenges result in a gap between the expected improvements in retail service and the actual user experience, potentially undermining customer confidence and operational efficiency. This study seeks to identify the specific factors that impede the optimal performance of upgraded POS systems at Wema Bank and to propose actionable strategies for enhancing system reliability and improving overall retail service delivery (Adeniran, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of POS system reliability enhancements on retail service at Wema Bank.

  2. To identify integration and network challenges affecting POS performance.

  3. To recommend strategies for improving maintenance and technical support.

Research Questions

  1. How do POS system reliability enhancements affect retail transaction performance at Wema Bank?

  2. What technical and connectivity challenges impede optimal performance?

  3. What measures can enhance system integration and support?

Research Hypotheses

  • H₁: POS system reliability enhancements significantly improve retail transaction efficiency.

  • H₂: Integration challenges and network variability negatively impact system performance.

  • H₃: Enhanced maintenance and technical support improve overall POS reliability.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on Wema Bank’s POS network performance over the past two years, using transaction logs, maintenance records, and regional network data. Limitations include regional connectivity disparities and integration challenges with legacy systems.

Definitions of Terms

  • POS System Reliability Enhancements: Upgrades implemented to improve the performance and dependability of point-of-sale systems.

  • Retail Service: The delivery of banking services through POS terminals.

  • Legacy Systems: Older technology infrastructures that require integration with new systems.
