INLAND AQUACULTURE IN NIGERIA: IMPROVING FINGERLING SUPPLY AND FISH NUTRITION FOR SMALLHOLDER FARMS

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to assessing inland aquaculture in Nigeria: improving fingerling supply and fish nutrition for smallholder farms using in Sagamu, Ogun state as a case study. Specifically, the study examine the level of production in the inland aquaculture sector in Nigeria; identify ways of improving fingerlings supply to smallholder farmers in Nigeria. The study further identify ways of improving the supply of fish nutrition to smallholder farmers in Nigeria. The population of the study comprises of 100 fish farmers in the study area. While the questionnaire was used as an instrument for data collection. A total of 70 responses were validated from the survey. The data collected were analyzed using frequency tables and percentages. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings revealed that the production in the inland aquaculture sector in Sagamu is at the average level. The study showed that Partnership with External groups, Construction of hatcheries and Access to finance and market are the possible ways of improving fingerlings supply to smallholder farmers in Nigeria. While the ways through which supply of fish nutrition of smallholder farmers in Nigeria can be improved include; lipids supply, supply of dietary carbohydrates, and supply of dietary protein. The study hereby recommend that there is need to raise awareness on fish farming, to obtain sustainable funding, increase monitoring and evaluation of fish farming projects,  earn legitimacy in fish farming projects, and improve market opportunities.
