Background of the Study
Transcript verification is a critical process in maintaining the integrity and credibility of academic records. At the University of Jos in Plateau State, traditional transcript verification methods are often time-consuming, susceptible to fraud, and prone to errors. The integration of blockchain technology with big data analytics offers a promising solution to these challenges. Blockchain, with its decentralized, immutable ledger system, can securely store and verify academic transcripts, ensuring that records remain tamper-proof and authentic (Oduwole, 2023). When combined with big data analytics, the system can process large volumes of transcript data, identify anomalies, and provide real-time verification services. This integrated approach not only enhances security and transparency but also reduces the processing time for transcript verification. The use of blockchain ensures that once a transcript is recorded, it cannot be altered without consensus from the network, thereby significantly reducing the risk of fraudulent modifications. Moreover, big data analytics enables the system to continuously monitor and analyze trends in academic records, providing insights that can inform institutional decision-making and policy formulation (Chinwe, 2024). The development of such a system is particularly important in an era where academic credentials are increasingly scrutinized for authenticity by employers and other educational institutions. However, implementing blockchain-based solutions requires overcoming technical challenges such as scalability, interoperability with existing systems, and ensuring user accessibility. This study aims to develop a blockchain-based transcript verification system that leverages big data analytics to ensure secure, efficient, and transparent management of academic records at the University of Jos.
Statement of the Problem
The traditional transcript verification process at the University of Jos is fraught with inefficiencies and vulnerabilities, including lengthy processing times, the risk of document fraud, and the potential for human error (Ibrahim, 2023). Current systems rely on centralized databases that are susceptible to unauthorized access and data manipulation, undermining the credibility of academic records. Furthermore, the manual nature of these processes leads to delays in verification, causing inconvenience to students and administrative bottlenecks. Although blockchain technology presents an opportunity to create a secure and tamper-proof system, its adoption in academic record management has been limited by technical complexities, integration issues with legacy systems, and concerns regarding data privacy. This study seeks to address these challenges by developing a blockchain-based transcript verification system that incorporates big data analytics for real-time monitoring and validation. The research will evaluate the system’s ability to detect and prevent fraudulent activities, reduce processing times, and improve overall transparency. It will also identify the technical and operational challenges associated with deploying such a system and propose strategies to mitigate these issues. The goal is to create a robust, scalable framework that can serve as a model for secure academic record management in higher education institutions.
