Background of the Study
Social media has become an influential platform for public discourse, providing real-time insights into public opinions and sentiments. In the context of university admissions, social media analysis offers a unique opportunity to gauge student and parent perceptions regarding the fairness, transparency, and effectiveness of admission processes. At Bayero University in Kano, understanding these sentiments is critical, as they can influence institutional reputation and future enrollment trends (Sani, 2023). By employing sentiment analysis techniques on social media data, researchers can uncover trends, identify areas of concern, and evaluate the overall satisfaction with the admission process. Digital tools and machine learning algorithms can process vast amounts of unstructured data from platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, categorizing opinions as positive, negative, or neutral (Abdullahi, 2024). Such analysis provides actionable insights that can help university administrators address issues, improve communication, and refine admission strategies. The dynamic nature of social media allows for continuous monitoring, enabling real-time adjustments to policies and practices. As the competition for higher education intensifies, ensuring a positive admission experience becomes a strategic priority for universities. This study aims to analyze social media sentiments regarding the admission processes at Bayero University, examining factors that contribute to positive or negative perceptions. Through a detailed case study, the research will assess the effectiveness of current admission practices and offer recommendations for enhancing transparency and user satisfaction. By understanding the social media landscape, the study intends to contribute to the broader discussion on digital feedback mechanisms and their role in shaping public policy in higher education (Chinwe, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
University admission processes often attract diverse opinions and criticisms, yet traditional feedback mechanisms may not capture the full spectrum of public sentiment. At Bayero University, the lack of systematic analysis of social media feedback creates a gap in understanding the concerns and expectations of prospective students and their families (Ibrahim, 2023). This absence of insight can lead to missed opportunities for improving the admissions process, as administrators remain unaware of underlying issues such as perceived unfairness, bureaucratic delays, or communication gaps. Additionally, negative sentiments expressed online can adversely affect the university’s reputation and deter potential applicants. While social media offers a rich source of public opinion data, there is limited research that systematically analyzes these sentiments in the context of university admissions in Kano. This study aims to address this gap by employing sentiment analysis to evaluate the public’s reaction to the admission processes at Bayero University. It will investigate the dominant themes in social media discussions, measure the overall sentiment polarity, and identify specific areas of concern. The findings are expected to provide actionable insights that can inform policy adjustments, improve the admission experience, and enhance overall satisfaction among stakeholders. Furthermore, by understanding the nuances of social media sentiments, the study will help in developing strategies to mitigate negative perceptions and strengthen the university’s public image (Olu, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To analyze social media sentiments regarding the admission process at Bayero University.

  2. To identify key factors contributing to positive and negative perceptions.

  3. To propose recommendations for improving the admission process based on sentiment analysis.

Research Questions:

  1. What are the predominant sentiments expressed about the university admission process on social media?

  2. Which aspects of the admission process generate the most positive or negative feedback?

  3. How can the findings from sentiment analysis inform improvements in the admission process?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the use of sentiment analysis to understand public opinions on university admission processes. By analyzing social media data, the research aims to provide valuable insights for Bayero University on how to enhance transparency, fairness, and overall user satisfaction. The findings will contribute to improving the institution’s admission practices and public image, offering a model for other universities to harness digital feedback for policy refinement.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to the analysis of social media sentiments regarding the admission process at Bayero University, Kano, Kano State, and does not extend to other universities or feedback channels.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Sentiment Analysis: The process of computationally identifying and categorizing opinions expressed in text.

  2. University Admission Process: The procedures and criteria used by a university to select incoming students.
