Background of the Study
The integration of advanced technologies in military training has become increasingly vital in preparing armed forces for complex modern warfare. At the Nigeria Defence Academy in Kaduna, augmented reality (AR) is being explored as a tool to enhance traditional training methods. AR overlays digital content onto the physical world, creating immersive training environments where military personnel can practice tactics, simulate battlefield scenarios, and develop critical decision-making skills without the risks associated with live exercises (Oluwaseun, 2023). The use of AR in military training offers numerous advantages, including improved situational awareness, real-time feedback, and the ability to simulate diverse combat conditions in a controlled setting. This interactive approach allows trainees to experience realistic scenarios that replicate the unpredictability of modern warfare, thereby better preparing them for field operations. Furthermore, AR-based training can be tailored to specific mission requirements, enhancing both individual and team performance (Babatunde, 2024). By providing a dynamic learning environment, AR has the potential to revolutionize traditional military exercises that rely heavily on theoretical instruction and limited practical drills. The Nigeria Defence Academy is keen to adopt such innovative technologies to improve training efficiency and effectiveness. This study aims to analyze the impact of AR on military training outcomes by evaluating its ability to enhance cognitive and physical skills, reduce training costs, and shorten the learning curve. The research also considers potential challenges such as technical constraints, user adaptation, and integration with existing training protocols (Chinwe, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Traditional military training methods at the Nigeria Defence Academy have limitations in replicating the complexities of modern combat scenarios. Conventional exercises, often based on theoretical lectures and live drills, do not adequately expose trainees to the unpredictable and multifaceted nature of modern warfare. This gap in training can lead to a lack of preparedness and reduced operational effectiveness in the field (Uche, 2023). Additionally, the high costs and logistical challenges associated with live training exercises limit the frequency and scope of realistic practice sessions. Although AR has the potential to create immersive and adaptable training environments, its implementation in military settings faces several obstacles. These include technological limitations, high initial costs, and resistance from traditional training establishments. This study aims to address these issues by evaluating whether AR can effectively bridge the gap between theoretical instruction and practical application. It will examine the extent to which AR-based training improves tactical decision-making, situational awareness, and physical readiness among cadets. Furthermore, the research will identify the technical and operational challenges in deploying AR technology within the Nigeria Defence Academy and propose strategies for its effective integration. The ultimate goal is to enhance the overall quality of military training, reduce training-related costs, and improve the readiness of military personnel for real-world operations (Ibrahim, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the impact of AR on enhancing tactical skills and decision-making.
To assess the effectiveness of AR in simulating realistic combat scenarios.
To identify challenges and recommend strategies for AR integration in military training.
Research Questions:
How does AR-based training improve situational awareness among military trainees?
What impact does AR have on the development of tactical decision-making skills?
What challenges are encountered in implementing AR in military training, and how can they be overcome?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the transformative potential of AR in military training at the Nigeria Defence Academy. By creating immersive training environments, AR has the capacity to enhance operational readiness and reduce training costs. The findings will provide critical insights for military educators and policymakers, guiding the integration of cutting-edge technologies into defense training protocols.
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to the application of AR in military training at the Nigeria Defence Academy and does not extend to other branches of the armed forces.
Definitions of Terms:
Augmented Reality (AR): A technology that overlays digital information on the real-world environment.
Military Training: The process of preparing military personnel through exercises and simulations.
