Background of the Study
Career guidance is an essential component of secondary education, assisting students in making informed decisions about their academic and professional futures. In Minna Local Government, Niger State, traditional career counseling is often limited by resource constraints and the inability to provide personalized guidance to every student. The design of an AI-based chatbot offers a promising solution by leveraging natural language processing, machine learning, and conversational AI to provide real-time, individualized career advice (Olu, 2023). Such chatbots can analyze student profiles, academic performance, and personal interests to generate tailored career recommendations. Additionally, they can answer frequently asked questions about career options, admission requirements, and job market trends, thereby enhancing the overall efficiency of career guidance services (Adebayo, 2024). The integration of AI technology in career counseling also offers scalability, ensuring that every student has access to reliable information regardless of the number of students seeking guidance. However, implementing such a system requires addressing challenges related to the accuracy of natural language understanding, ensuring data privacy, and overcoming resistance from traditional counseling paradigms (Balogun, 2025). This study aims to design and evaluate an AI-based chatbot specifically for secondary school career guidance, comparing its performance with traditional counseling methods and providing recommendations for its effective integration into existing educational support systems.
Statement of the Problem
Secondary schools in Minna Local Government face significant challenges in providing comprehensive career guidance to students due to limited counseling resources and an increasing student population (Olu, 2023). Traditional career counseling methods, which rely heavily on face-to-face interactions, are not scalable and often fail to deliver personalized advice to every student. While an AI-based chatbot promises to address these issues by offering real-time, individualized career guidance, its implementation is hindered by several factors. Key challenges include ensuring the accuracy of the chatbot’s natural language processing capabilities, maintaining data privacy, and integrating the system with existing school support services (Adebayo, 2024). Additionally, there is skepticism among educators and students regarding the reliability and human touch of automated career advice, which may limit user acceptance. These challenges result in a gap between the potential benefits of AI-driven career guidance and the current inadequacies of traditional methods. This study seeks to bridge this gap by developing an AI-based chatbot for career guidance, evaluating its performance, and identifying strategies to overcome technical and ethical challenges, thus enhancing the overall effectiveness and accessibility of career counseling services (Balogun, 2025).
