Background of the Study
Academic counseling plays a crucial role in guiding students through their educational journey, helping them to overcome challenges and make informed decisions about their academic and career paths. At the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, traditional counseling services have been largely dependent on face-to-face interactions, which, while personalized, are often limited by resource constraints and inconsistent availability of trained counselors. Recently, the emergence of AI in educational support has opened new avenues for enhancing counseling effectiveness. AI-driven counseling systems utilize natural language processing, machine learning, and data analytics to provide personalized guidance and support to students on a continuous basis (Adebayo, 2023). These systems can analyze a student’s academic history, behavioral patterns, and expressed concerns to generate tailored counseling advice and even predict potential challenges before they escalate (Olu, 2024). By automating routine aspects of counseling, AI solutions can free up human counselors to focus on more complex cases, thereby increasing the overall efficiency and reach of the counseling services. Moreover, AI-based platforms offer round-the-clock accessibility, ensuring that students receive timely support regardless of their location or time constraints. However, the deployment of AI in counseling is not without challenges. Issues such as data privacy, the ethical use of student information, and the need for continuous updates to the AI algorithms must be carefully managed to ensure that the system remains both effective and trustworthy (Balogun, 2025). In this context, enhancing academic counseling services with AI has the potential to transform student support at the University of Ilorin by delivering consistent, evidence-based advice that aligns with individual needs, ultimately improving academic outcomes and student satisfaction.

Statement of the Problem
University of Ilorin currently faces significant challenges in delivering effective academic counseling services due to limitations in traditional, human-centric methods. The manual approach, while personalized, is constrained by limited counselor availability and inconsistent service quality, which often leaves many students without timely support (Adebayo, 2023). Although the integration of AI promises to augment counseling services by providing continuous, data-driven guidance, its implementation is hindered by concerns over data privacy, algorithmic bias, and the potential loss of the human touch in counseling. Many students and staff remain skeptical about relying on automated systems for sensitive academic and personal advice (Olu, 2024). Additionally, the lack of robust digital infrastructure and the need for regular system updates to maintain accuracy further complicate the adoption process. Without effective intervention, the inadequacies in counseling services can lead to decreased student performance, increased dropout rates, and overall dissatisfaction. This study seeks to address these issues by evaluating the potential of AI-driven counseling systems to enhance the effectiveness of academic counseling, thereby providing a more accessible, consistent, and personalized support mechanism that meets the diverse needs of the student population (Balogun, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:
• To develop an AI-driven model for academic counseling.
• To evaluate its effectiveness compared to traditional counseling services.
• To recommend strategies for addressing ethical and privacy concerns in AI-based counseling.

Research Questions:
• How effective is the AI-based counseling system in providing personalized academic support?
• What are the challenges and limitations of integrating AI into counseling services?
• How can data privacy and ethical concerns be mitigated in AI counseling systems?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the potential of AI to enhance academic counseling at the University of Ilorin. The findings will offer evidence-based insights into improving student support, optimizing resource allocation, and increasing overall student satisfaction, thereby fostering a more robust academic environment (Adebayo, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to the evaluation of academic counseling services at the University of Ilorin, Kwara State.

Definitions of Terms:
AI-Based Counseling: The use of artificial intelligence to provide personalized academic guidance (Olu, 2024).
Academic Counseling: Services designed to assist students in making educational and career decisions (Adebayo, 2023).
Personalized Support: Tailored assistance that meets individual student needs (Balogun, 2025).
