Background of the Study
Market deregulation has emerged as a significant force reshaping the financial landscape, particularly in sectors once dominated by strict regulatory oversight. First City Monument Bank (FCMB) has been at the forefront of navigating these regulatory shifts in Nigeria. The easing of market controls and liberalization of financial policies have created an environment conducive to innovation and competitive practices in investment banking (Adekunle, 2023). Deregulation has enabled banks like FCMB to expand service portfolios, adopt new financial instruments, and engage in more aggressive market strategies. The removal of regulatory barriers has also increased the ease of cross-border transactions and access to international capital markets. FCMB’s strategic response has included diversification of investment products, adoption of innovative risk management frameworks, and leveraging technology to capitalize on emerging opportunities. Recent studies underscore a positive correlation between market deregulation and enhanced bank performance, suggesting that deregulated environments can spur innovation and operational efficiency (Ogunleye, 2024). However, deregulation also introduces challenges such as heightened competition, increased market volatility, and potential risks arising from less stringent oversight. These dynamics necessitate that banks recalibrate their investment strategies to balance opportunities with emerging risks. This study explores how market deregulation has influenced FCMB’s strategic decisions and operational practices. By examining the interplay between regulatory changes and strategic adaptations, the research provides insights into how deregulation affects competitive positioning and risk management in investment banking.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential benefits of market deregulation, FCMB faces significant strategic challenges amid reduced regulatory oversight. The primary problem is balancing increased competitive pressures with the need to maintain effective risk management practices (Babatunde, 2024). Deregulation has led to an influx of new entrants and innovative financial products, intensifying competition and pressuring traditional banking models. FCMB must navigate an environment where relaxed market controls can lead to instability and heightened financial risks. Moreover, the transition from a regulated to a deregulated market exposes gaps in the bank’s strategic frameworks, particularly in risk assessment and portfolio diversification. Rapid changes can render existing strategies obsolete, increasing operational uncertainty. This study aims to determine how FCMB can realign its investment banking strategies to thrive in a deregulated market while mitigating associated risks.

Objectives of the Study
– To assess the impact of market deregulation on FCMB’s investment banking strategies.
– To evaluate challenges and opportunities arising from deregulation in the Nigerian banking sector.
– To propose strategic measures for enhancing competitiveness and risk management.

Research Questions
– How has market deregulation influenced FCMB’s investment banking strategies?
– What challenges has deregulation introduced to the bank’s operations?
– What strategies can enhance FCMB’s competitive positioning in a deregulated market?

Research Hypotheses
– H1: Market deregulation positively influences FCMB’s strategic innovation.
– H2: Increased competition due to deregulation negatively impacts traditional banking models.
– H3: Strategic risk management mitigates the adverse effects of deregulation.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is confined to FCMB’s response to market deregulation, focusing on strategic and operational changes. Limitations include limited access to proprietary internal strategy documents and evolving regulatory policies.
